Noble Notes: Is It Safe To Watch Anime?

You are probably familiar with anime, a Japanese art form that first became known here in the 1990’s. Anime is an expressive style of animation like that you see in the picture above. The children of the 90’s are parents today and they are passing on the love of anime to their children. Anime continues to grow in popularity and cultural influence. In 2020 global anime generated 22.6 billion dollars, and by 2030 that market is expected to grow to 48.3 billion dollars.

Anime is popular with older children and teenagers because there is the child-like comfort of a cartoon but with more expressive character animation and more mature storylines. While anime is appealing it is important to be aware of precisely what kind of anime is being watched by our children.

Within anime are genres which are pornographic and violent. The name for this especially disturbing genre is hentai. Outside of Japan hentai means anime with pornographic content. In Japanese the word means a perverse sexual desire or act.

Research is showing that a large percentage of children are being introduced to pornography via hentai. As Dr. Gail Dines states “At first glance, hentai looks like it might have been plucked from the Cartoon Network. But the genre is rife with graphic sexual violence.”

Hentai has remained the most-searched term on the porn hosting site Pornhub for multiple years. It is also one of the most common ways children are introduced to porn. It is dangerous for these reasons:

•         Hentai grooms men into seeing children as a sexual target.
•         It risks the mental, sexual, and physical health of young people.
•         Hentai increases the likelihood of becoming an adult consumer of pornography.
•         Much of the hentai depicted on porn websites are legally criminal acts of violence,

most of which targets women.

A call to action has been put forth that includes age verification for consumers, civil lawsuits, and sex education that is porn-critical. All of this is necessary but without parental awareness the threat posed from hentai will remain. Let’s protect our children from hentai.
