Alderman Reilly Reports

Noise Camera Ordinance Moves

to Public Safety Committee Next Week

Next week on May 22 at 10:30am, Alderman Reilly’s ordinance to install noise “cameras” on the streets downtown will be discussed in the Committee on Public Safety. This ordinance will allow the use of devices that automatically detect and ticket vehicles producing loud muffler sounds above the limit outlined in the municipal code. These devices will help deter drag racing and excessively loud engines downtown.

Alderman Reilly encourages residents to come to the Committee meeting on 5/22 to participate in the public comment period. This is a great way for residents to express their support for the ordinance’s goal of combating drag racing downtown. To participate, arrive at City Hall on 5/22 at 9am and inform the City Clerk's office (1st floor) that you would like to enter the lottery for the Public Safety Committee's public comment that day. The public comment period will begin shortly after the Committee meeting begins at 10:30am.

If you wish to participate remotely, please call 312-744-6800, leave your first and last name, and say you would like to enter the lottery for the Public Safety Committee's public comment on 5/22. To be eligible, callers must leave their information between 10:00am on May 20 and 9:00am on May 21. If selected, you will be contacted on May 21 with instructions to access the meeting.

If you are not available to speak during the Committee meeting, written public comment on Alderman Reilly's ordinance will be accepted at

Committeeonpublicsafety@cityofchicago.org until Tuesday, May 20, at 5pm.

Proposed Landmark Designation:

161 East Erie Street

On May 15, 2025, the Commission on Chicago Landmarks held a public hearing regarding the proposed designation of 161 East Erie Street as a Chicago Landmark. The hearing included presentations from City staff, testimony from the property owner, and input from community stakeholders. This public hearing was a required step in the process, as the property owner did not consent to the proposed designation.

The Commission is expected to issue a final recommendation on landmark designation at its next meeting on Wednesday, June 5. That meeting is open to the public and will be livestreamed for those who wish to follow the proceedings. Alderman Reilly appreciates the community’s engagement on this matter and will continue to share updates as they become available.
