THE NOMINEES
Vying for the Public History award are 25 nominees including: Eat More Scarborough, urban explorations that combine engaging tours of restaurants, with food tastings, and neighbourhood-based narrations of Scarborough's history, architecture, and arts scene; Charlotte's Castle, a film on the efforts of an eclectic group of tenants as they battle to safeguard their mid-rise apartment complex, a Toronto historical landmark; and Planting Imagination, a two-year public education initiative that used virtual reality technology to facilitate community participation in the design of a garden and gathering space in Toronto's Chinatown. Two awards will be presented in this category, including the Peoples Choice Award selected by event attendees and Heritage Toronto supporters.
This year's 15 Book Award nominees include What Television Remembers, an investigation on how television shaped Toronto’s collective imagination and affirmed viewers in their multiple identities as local residents, national citizens, and transnational consumers; Clara at the Door with a Revolver, an account of a scandalous murder that delves into societal attitudes, gender and race hypocrisy, and the politics of media power in nineteenth-century Toronto; and Joy. Sorrow. Anger. Love. PRIDE, an examination of the vibrant history, activism, and sheer resilience that has defined Toronto Pride over the decades.
Highlighted among the 13 projects in the Built Heritage category are the restoration of the Queen's Wharf Lighthouse, a historically significant piece of Toronto’s maritime heritage; Residences on Lombard, the adaptive reuse of Romanesque Revival-style buildings, formerly printing houses, into residential condominiums integrated with an adjacent high-rise tower; and Wonder Condos, the transformation of an Edwardian factory complex into a mixed-use building. Three awards will be presented in this category, sponsored by Aird & Berlis, Clifford Restoration Ltd., and LiUNA Local 183.
