Colorado Health Care
Training and Consulting

January 24, 2018

 "Motivation determines
what you do. Attitude
determines
how well
you do it."

Lou Holtz

Each year CHC provides training and consulting to hundreds of agencies, their staff of nurses, therapists, personal care providers, and aides as well as to family and other caregivers who provide in-home services to the infirm, chronically ill and disabled  to improve care, quality and safety.
 Partial federal government shutdown

The partial federal government shutdown continues this morning despite negotiations throughout the weekend. Congress is expected to reconvene today with a vote scheduled in the U.S. Senate to consider a short-term proposal to reopen the government. Meanwhile, at least half of the Health and Human Services (HHS) staff will be furloughed today causing implications for Medicare and Medicaid-certified home-based care providers. Federal employees are expected to report for work this morning and will have four hours to hand off and "shut down" current work.

What this means for home-based care providers:
* Claims will continue to be paid.
* Eligibility verification for federal programs will slow significantly, except for the federal health care exchanges-they are using user fee funds.
* Community health services will have a minimal staff.
* Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation activities will continue.
* The Administration for Community Living will not be able to fund:
* Senior Nutrition Programs
* Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program
* Independent Living Centers
* Other services

MAC Operations Continue During Shutdown

During the time that the partial government shutdown is in effect, Medicare Administrative Contractors will continue to perform all functions related to Medicare fee-for-service claims processing and payment.
