Much of Nonny's non illustration work is based on largely two subjects; the teachings of Russian philospher G. I. Gurdjieff (c. 1877-1949) and the Armenian Genocide.

Gurdjieff expoused that most humans live in a state of hypnotic "waking sleep" and need to awaken to a higher state of consciousness to acheive their full potential. Part of this practice involved teaching "sacred dances" later known as Gurdjieff Movements. Hence many of her works are of people dancing.

The Armenian Genocide (1915-1917) was the systematic destruction of the Armenian people by the Ottoman Empire during World War I. Nonny's husband David Kherdian's book, The Road Home: A True Story of Courage, Survival, and Hope recreates his mother's story, and is considered one of the essential books of Armenian culture. It was awarded a Newbery Honor which along with Nonny's two Caldecott Medals, makes them the only couple to have won both prestigious prizes.

Please join us for the Opening Reception on Friday, May 12th, from 6-8 pm for an evening with Nonny and a special poetry reading by poet and husband, David Kherdian.

A PURPOSE

Life is not here for us to be happy,

that is not its purpose,

it is here to be itself,

and when we find and make a Being,

we will have found the place,

where our purpose might appear—

once we are fit to serve,

knowing then that we are more

than our purpose and also less,

being a part of something very

large, unnamed, thereby called God,

able to name us, honor us, cherish us,

as part of a greater purpose, unknown

by us, soldiers in the field of life,

struggling and yearning,

who seek self-satisfaction and happiness,

which can only be found when we know

our purpose, and enter it as ourself.

—David Kherdian
