August 2025

Message from the Executive Director

After a flurry of activities the past few weeks, from the ribbon cutting to candidate interviews, move-in days to intern farewells, it has been nice to have a few quiet moments to focus on behind-the-scenes tasks like preparing this newsletter. I've always liked this task because it pulls together the good stuff and is a reminder of all the great things people are doing in the nonprofit sector. This month, we spotlight One Annapolis, share move in photos, open registration for our fall cohort, list educator grants and much more! And, if there is something you'd like to see - or something you'd like to share - in future issues of NonprofitNEWS, let us know!

Hurray! It's Finally Official!

On August 4, 2025, with almost 100 people in attendance, the Nonprofit Center held its official ribbon cutting. It was a beautiful day in so many ways. If you couldn't attend, you can watch the ceremony here. Start at 34:14 to hear from the first three resident nonprofits. They are amazing!

If you prefer a much shorter look, check out the local media coverage.

CBS, WBAL, WMAR, Capital Gazette, Baltimore Banner, Eye on Annapolis.

If your organization is looking for low-cost office space and capacity-building support, this is a great time to reach out. The Nonprofit Center offers tours on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays each week.

What We Heard From You

Last month, we asked local nonprofits to complete a short survey to help us plan the Nonprofit Center's upcoming cohorts, conference, and other professional development programming. There was a 27% response rate with almost equal representation from organizations of all sizes. When we asked about a Fundraising & Sustainability 2.0 concept, 52% said "Love it!" 42% thought it was a reasonable idea, and 7% thought we should offer 1.0 again.

In response to your feedback, F&S 2.0 will be a deep dive into the four topics that were requested most. And, we're offering the cohort in the afternoon because respondents identified evenings as their least preferred time. Space is limited, so register soon!

We're Taking A Deep Dive

We also asked about potential conference topics. These are the results. Stayed tuned for a program that is engaging, practical and timely!

The Nonprofit Center is located on the campus of the former Crownsville State Hospital and is part of County Executive Steuart Pittman's vision for Crownsville Hospital Memorial Park. Many of you may be familiar with its history already. If not, we encourage you to learn more by:

  • visiting aacounty.org/CrownsvillePark
  • reading Madness, Race and Insanity in a Jim Crow Asylum by Antonia Hylton (the Nonprofit Center has a few copies available to borrow)

On September 4th, the Say My Name Memorial Dedication and Unveiling will honor over 1,700 individuals who lived and died at Crownsville State Hospital. Visit aacounty.org/saymyname for more information.

Thank You Summer Interns! How Time Flies

Conor, Juliet, and Shelen joined us in June and, in just a blink of an eye, are headed back to school. Kudos to them for taking on the wide range of tasks that come along with opening a new facility. From building shelves to creating report templates, responding to inquiries and managing the meeting calendar, to event planning and weed pulling (we promised not to share that photo), they went above and beyond.

They also worked on and presented individual projects:

“We created the Nonprofit Center to support the people who support our communities. It will bring organizations together under one roof to build a stronger, more connected Anne Arundel County.” ― County Executive Steuart Pittman

Nonprofits Get It Done

The National Council of Nonprofits (NCN) coordinated a National Nonprofit Day - Day of Action on August 17th. The goal was to create a powerful, visible show of support for the nonprofit sector. Even if you couldn't participate this weekend, there are still opportunities to remind decision makers why nonprofits are indispensable to the communities we live in.
