Tip of the Month: Financial Management

Our Tips of the Month share simple, practical advice inspired by our Principles & Practices guide to help you strengthen your organization, connect with your community, and reach your mission.

Check out this month's tip for strategies to build strong financial management practices that help to mitigate threats and ride out this current wave of uncertainty.

The Center is excited to again partner with NCACPA on their 2025 Not-For-Profit Accounting Conference on June 2 in Greensboro! The conference kicks off with the Center’s David Heinen sharing the latest on legislative developments shaping the nonprofit sector, setting the stage for a day of insight and connection. Networking and learning ensue around auditing & accounting, tax, technology, and other critical not-for-profit issues to help nonprofits expand skills, forge meaningful connections, and stay at the forefront of the sector. Center Members can register – with in-person and virtual options – at the NCACPA member rates (see instructions). Learn more and register!

Resources to Navigate Uncertainty

North Carolina nonprofits are feeling the pressure and anxiety of trying to meet their missions while navigating the whirlwind of changes in federal funding and policies – including the latest news that DOGE is taking over Grants.gov. To help your organization prepare and stay grounded, check out these resources and tools, which we’ll continue to update.

Staying current on these changes is important for nonprofits to maintain compliance and transparency. But change in general can be stressful. Having space to connect with others, share your experiences, and work on ways to manage in the face of change can be an opportune stress-reliever.

Member Benefit: Center members are automatically affiliate members of the Nonprofit Risk Management Center, with unlimited access to advice and resources on risk management topics and discounts on their policy creation and risk/financial management planning tools.

Join the in-person Nonprofit Policy Conversation in your area with nonprofit and local leaders to discuss key policy issues affecting our sector and communities.

Celebrating Volunteers

Volunteers are an essential thread in the fabric of North Carolina's nonprofit sector. In 2023, more than 2.2 million North Carolinians contributed over 125 million hours of service – worth an estimated $4 billion. We’ve seen firsthand the invaluable heart and hands of volunteers this past year especially during crises like Hurricane Helene when organizations’ tapped that volunteer power to provide immediate and essential aid to people and communities when they need it most (and continue to do so). Take a moment during National Volunteer Month – right now – or National Volunteer Week – April 20-26 – to recognize and thank your volunteers for sharing their compassion and diverse skills to extend our nonprofits’ capacities, missions, and sense of community.

Member Resources: Ensure your volunteers feel engaged, rewarded, and eager to keep volunteering by maintaining sound volunteer management, including organized and ongoing training and transparent expectations and communication.
