Nonprofit Connections newsletter of the North Carolina Center for Nonprofits

Over the last year, the North Carolina Center for Nonprofits has renewed our vision, values, and commitment to equity. As part of that commitment, our newsletters are now open to anyone who subscribes – regardless of membership status – so information and resources are readily available to support nonprofits and their missions. February 2024

Celebrate Freedoms

This month, we recognize black history, however, we honor the history, discourse, and contributions that go well beyond just one month’s time. The civil rights movement is an integral part of black history in America and one of its pillars – to restore voting rights for Black Americans – underscores the importance of empowering Americans of all races, sexes, religions, and creeds to exercise their right to elect their local, state, and federal leaders.

As trusted organizations and messengers in our own communities, nonprofits can and should help inform, educate, and encourage eligible voters to choose our decision-makers at all levels of government. It may seem tricky to navigate nonpartisan voter engagement, but we’ve answered common questions about what nonprofits can and cannot do, recorded our latest conversation about nonprofits and the upcoming elections, and are pulling together election tips of the week to share out.

Regional Center partners are also cohosting in-person gatherings with us around the state to talk about current policy issues and solutions that are important to your organizations, how to meet up with your legislators (possibly meet them at these gatherings), and effective advocacy techniques. These Nonprofit Policy Conversations begin in March – register for the location closest to you:

  • March 14 in Asheville in partnership with WNC Nonprofit Pathways
  • March 22 in High Point in partnership with Guilford Nonprofit Consortium and HandsOn NWNC
  • April 15 in Fayetteville in partnership with Cumberland Community Foundation
  • April 19 in Wilmington in partnership with QENO
  • May 20 in Charlotte in partnership with Foundation For The Carolinas
  • TBD in the Triangle

Keep Up Your Grants Game

Grant funding is an essential part of fundraising for most nonprofits. Managing your grants proactively is, as Foundant Technology puts it, like putting oil in your car – it keeps everything running smoothly. So it’s worth your time and effort to establish and follow an organizational process to track, evaluate, and report on your grant funding, with a few guiding steps like:

  • Create a grant tracking list and calendar
  • Organize your funders and grant history
  • Coordinate grant team responsibilities and schedules
  • Create a library of templates and support documents
  • Regularly report on progress internally

For an additional hands-on approach to grant seeking, writing, and reporting, our Grant Series: Expand Your Grant Application Toolkit – beginning on March 5 – provides a deeper dive into grant management and grantor relationship building

For a self-paced approach to understanding and writing grant proposals, the Ultimate Grant Proposal Blueprint workshop series provides strategies, planning tools, worksheets, roadmaps, and fillable templates to help nonprofits craft clear, compelling, and fundable grant proposals.

Member Resource Bonus: No matter what type of funding your organization looks for or receives, sharing your nonprofit’s story and the impact of your work is important. Listen in on these tips and techniques to tell better stories.

Member Benefit Bonus: Center members can take advantage of discounted membership to GrantStation. Learn more about their online grant research database, tools, resources, training, strategy guides, and weekly newsletter of funding opportunities.
