June 2025
| | | | Today marks the anniversary of June 19, 1865 when Texas, the last of the US southern states at the time, received the official proclamation that slaves were free. However, Juneteenth's significance extends beyond marking the end of slavery. It’s a celebration of African American resilience, culture, and community, a reminder of a prolonged and incomplete emancipation, and a call for continued efforts to dismantle systemic inequalities for which nonprofits and our sector continually answer. | | |

Advocacy & Civic Engagement 102
This conversation about unlocking your advocacy role couldn’t be more timely. Deepa Iyer’s Social Change Map is an advocacy framework, designed for turbulent times, to help individuals and organizations assess and determine their role to be more powerful advocates in the moment. Alongside guidance on staying rooted and responsive in your values when they are threatened, the map helps you outline the roles of others, how their roles complement yours, and where there are gaps or overlaps. Organizations can use it as a regular check on: What roles have we played? Where have we supported others? Where can we grow?
It's also important to stay up-to-date on what’s happening to inform and fortify your role and work as an advocate:

Congratulations, Grads!
Congratulations to the 51 incredible leaders who graduated from this spring’s Nonprofit Management Institute! We’re so proud of their commitment to strengthening their leadership and management practices not just for their own professional growth, but for the growth and success of their organizations.
NPMI alum Wren Davisson addressed the graduates with a powerful message: Great leadership begins with showing up. These graduates did just that – showing up for themselves, their missions, and each other. And along the way, they formed a supportive cohort of peers to cheer one another on long after the program ends.
As graduate Amirah Saintyl, Program Director at SAFEchild, shared, “Even though it’s virtual, the space allowed me to grow, connect, and be inspired with others in the nonprofit space. I’m leaving with more practical tools, a renewed sense of energy, and a network that reminds me that we don’t do this work alone.”

Pulse Check on Our Sector
The new 2025 State of the Sector Report* reflects what many of us in the nonprofit sector are already feeling: growing operational challenges driven by political actions, funding uncertainty, and staff burnout. The report doesn’t just name the issues, it calls out solutions like clearer communication among sectors, more flexible funding models, and better support for staff well-being. We’re right there with you and these upcoming webinars explore new and different approaches we can apply to our own organizations like:

Tech Equity
Equity isn’t just about who we serve – it’s also about how we work. So equity in nonprofit technology isn’t just a goal – it’s a responsibility. NTEN recently updated its Equity Guide for Nonprofit Technology to help nonprofit staff, funders, and technologists assess and advance equity in how technology is used, funded, and built across the sector. The guide now includes a companion resource – The Tech 28 – with 28 questions to help nonprofit boards engage in meaningful conversations about your organization’s technology strategy. Check out these free tools to support strategic, equitable decision-making.
