Bringing EDI to Nonprofit Management

Insightful practices like inviting diverse perspectives to our boards, reexamining our workplace cultures for inclusivity, diversifying fundraising strategies, and centering equity in collaborations are just some of the key takeaways from our most recent series of EDI Roundtables for Nonprofit Executives. The experience of meeting nonprofit leaders from diverse locations and missions, and discussions that explore different aspects of our management practices through an EDI lens continue to support us all in our EDI journeys.

Member Resource Bonus: This EDI action toolkit helps organizations assess five essential organizational practices, identify areas for improvement, and offers tools and resources to initiate changes.

Supporting Volunteers

Volunteers support the livelihood of many of our nonprofits. While April is a month to really shine a light on these volunteers – with a specific day (April 20) dedicated to recognizing volunteers, a full week (April 21-27) to honor their volunteer service, and the full month to appreciate their contributions – it’s also an opportunity to reflect on, adapt, and enhance practices to recruit and retain volunteers.

Here’s an interesting perspective on recruiting volunteers, namely how to appeal to a younger generation of volunteers and highlight the feel-good factors of service. Although this advice is written for board service, it can easily translate into inviting volunteers for other programs, activities, and events.

Here are valuable practices and actionable tips to protect and guide your relationship and engagement with volunteers.

Talking Policy

We’re halfway through our series of Nonprofit Policy Conversations and appreciate the honest conversations and insights participants are bringing. It not only helps us to adapt our advocacy efforts on behalf of North Carolina nonprofits but also to understand what your nonprofits need to best support your efforts to advocate legally and effectively. Our mission advocacy tools are an ongoing work in progress to provide videos, articles, summaries, guides, and more on every aspect of nonprofit advocacy.

Is there a resource that has helped your organization advocate successfully? Let us know!

Mailing Letters Old School

Strategic messaging has the power to motivate community members to engage in our missions, volunteers to serve, and donors to give. The delivery of our messages has increasingly moved into digital spaces but there’s still much to be said for good old fashioned direct mail. Need a refresh on how that process works and why it connects with people emotionally, mentally, and intellectually? The Direct Mail Appeals webinar series will break down crafting, segmenting, and customizing appeals that move your audience into action – join one or both sessions. Then add an additional strategy to your messaging and fundraising efforts and woo those ultra philanthropists and do-gooders.

Member Benefit Bonus: Nonprofits that raise funds are required to register with the state for charitable solicitation. Learn how Center members can get registration and renewal services and guidance from Affinity Fundraising Registration at a discount through our money-saving program.
