November 2024

As this season of thanks and giving begins, we want to share how much we appreciate our incredible network of nonprofits across North Carolina. Thank you for your dedication every day to lift up and make our communities stronger! | |
Now That It’s Post-Election
In this post-election period, we acknowledge the wide range of emotions people are experiencing and remain steadfast in supporting and working alongside nonprofits to uplift and strengthen our communities. Our friends at the National Council of Nonprofits summarize some important actions to remember as we continue to lead with purpose, compassion, and resilience:
- Stay focused on your mission and uphold your commitment to nonpartisanship
- Use advocacy and civic engagement to drive meaningful change
- Remember that when we work together, the nonprofit sector is a powerful force for good
- Prioritize staff wellbeing and express gratitude for their tireless dedication
The Bridgespan Group also offers thoughtful questions and guidance to help organizations reassess and realign with your community and mission following an election and changes in leadership dynamics.
What’s in store for public policy issues affecting North Carolina nonprofits? Join us for a discussion tomorrow, November 15 at 10 am. We’ll highlight key election results that could impact nonprofits' advocacy with the NC General Assembly and executive branch of state government and shape the policy landscape at the state and federal level for the rest of this year and in 2025. We'll also discuss the latest on legislative support for Hurricane Helene relief and recovery and the status of the U.S. Department of Labor's overtime rule, which is scheduled to take effect on January 1, 2025. Registration is free.
| Resource Bonus: Subscribe to the Nonprofit Policy Update for weekly email updates on public policy issues, advocacy, and legislation that affect North Carolina nonprofits. | |
Congrats to Fall Grads!
Congratulations to the Fall 2024 graduates of the Nonprofit Management Institute! We're so proud of these 57 nonprofit leaders for their commitment to strengthening their organizations through more effective management practices and investing in their own professional growth.
“After each session, I became more confident in approaching my executive director with new ideas and plans,” shared a new graduate. “The Nonprofit Management Institute has given me the framework to plan better and set more realistic goals.”
Hear more about the graduates' connections and lessons learned, and how much HEART is in our nonprofit work.
If you’re interested in learning about or attending the spring 2025 Institute, let us know.

Ongoing Support for WNC Nonprofits
Rebuilding has begun but it will be a long road. We continue to update disaster recovery and resources available locally and online, including relief funding and grants, pro bono counseling, tax and unemployment assistance, and connections to local organizations providing aid.
We’re also in touch with state legislators to advocate on how they can support nonprofits as they direct state aid toward hurricane relief and recovery. You can also reach out to your legislators so they know what nonprofits need to fully recover and continue serving our communities.

Sustain Wellness
As the year winds down, we start to hear a lot about wellness, rest, and slowing down – something we all crave during what often feels like the busiest time of year. It aligns with what Amber Melanie Smith talked about during her keynote at last month’s annual Conference for NC’s Nonprofits. Stress and burnout are a key factor in a wide employment gap in the nonprofit sector and after upending Amber’s own work life, she recognized important roles we can fill in our own lives to help ourselves and our sector prevent or heal from burnout – be your own advocate, be an ally, be an agitator, and be an activator. Beth Kanter takes another approach, that organizations can take responsibility with challenging but necessary changes in leadership styles and workplace culture to address burnout at its root.
| Member Benefit Bonus: A supportive guide can make a big difference in self-care and maintaining perspective (like it did for this fellow colleague). Center Members can connect with professional coaches who focus on health and wellness, or other professional growth areas. | |
