Misconceptions about Lifecycles Stages

Each issue we will feature ongoing education. This month we are highlighting some of the biggest misconceptions about the Lifecycles Stages.

True or False: Every organization goes through all the Lifecycles stages
True or False: An organization enters decline after maturity
True or False: Achieving alignment within your lifecycle stage is the goal.

Answers:

False - This is diagnostic, not deterministic. Not every organization goes through all stages.
False - An organization can find itself in decline from any stage, which is why it is important to understand your current lifecycle stage capacity challenges to ward off slipping into decline.
True - Having solid, aligned legs (business model, governance, systems, staff) to best support your programs and mission is what you want to strive for.

In October our President and CEO, Jennifer Bonnett, was able to speak with two of those partners on a panel on 'Capacity Building and the Cohort Model' at the 2023 NYS Funders Conference. Thanks to the Gifford Foundation for hosting the panel and for their incredible partnership in launching Embracing Disruption - a program built on the Nonprofit Lifecycles approach to capacity building. And thank you to ReachCNY for sharing their journey as part of the current cohort of participating nonprofits.

On Nov 7, NLI COO Melanie Mitros was a speaker at the Collaboration Consultant Community of Practice's webinar about Fiscal Sponsorships as a strategic collaboration tool for successful partnerships in the nonprofit sector. We love to be a part of great events like these, sharing knowledge and learning from others in the nonprofit sector.
