MFFM’s mission is to cultivate a vibrant, sustainable farmers’ market community as a vital part of Maine’s local food network. The Federation works with farmers, consumers, and communities to make wholesome, locally-grown foods available to all residents, to educate consumers about food resources, and to support farm viability.

Advocate

Nonprofit organizations have two immediate opportunities to have an impact on pending, pro-nonprofit legislation:

Grants Reform: The bipartisan Streamlining Federal Grants Act (S.2286/H.R. 5934) would establish a Grants Council to provide guidance to federal agencies on streamlining and simplifying grant applications and reporting requirements; improve nonprofits’ user experiences with federal grants; and solicit input from nonprofits and other partners on ways to improve the delivery of services to communities through federal grants.

• Attend a webinar: National Council of Nonprofits is hosting a session on November 20th on The Urgency of Government Grants Reform for Your Nonprofit to learn more about the challenges and proposed solutions.

Charitable Giving: The Charitable Act (S.566/H.R. 3435) is bipartisan legislation that would create a non-itemizer or universal charitable deduction of about $4,600 for individuals and $9,200 for couples who take the standard deduction on their income tax forms.

• Read the letter to leaders in Congress and add your organization’s name by November 17.
