TRIAD NONPROFITS GET IT DONE Impact Story

Each month, we will feature a Triad nonprofit that gets it done for the Triad. The Greater High Point Food Alliance (GHPFA) brings together local partners to reduce hunger and build a more just, sustainable food system through coordinated, city-wide and neighborhood-driven action. GHPFA tackles the root causes of food insecurity through advocacy and community engagement, shaping policies that expand equitable access to nutritious food. Centering the voices of those most affected, the team collaborates with government leaders at every level to drive systemic change.

Government Shutdown Threatens Food Aid for Millions

By the end of this week, nearly 42 million people in the U.S. who get federal food assistance through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) are in danger of seeing their benefits disappear because of the ongoing federal shutdown. SNAP, formerly known as food stamps, is the country's largest anti-hunger program. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has the authority to use contingency and carryover funds to keep SNAP running through November, but it has not yet taken action to do so. The USDA says contingency funds are "not legally available" to extend regular benefits and are meant only for "natural disasters like hurricanes, tornadoes, and floods." If you or someone you know currently receives SNAP benefits, please remember that October SNAP benefits have been fully funded and are already loaded to EBT cards. If SNAP is not funded in November, benefits might be delayed, but will be reimbursed when the shutdown ends. No one will permanently lose their benefits due to the shutdown. For local information on the shutdown and SNAP, visit the Guilford County website.
