What is C-BARQ?

As part of our behavior modification program, our training department uses a survey tool called the C-BARQ.

This stands for Canine Behavioral Assessment & Research Questionnaire (C-BARQ). It's a standardized, behavioral evaluation tool for dog owners/guardians, handlers and professionals. It provides a set of numerical scores for fourteen different categories of dog behavior. The survey was validated and is maintained through The University of Pennsylvania.

Behavior problems are the leading cause of premature death (by euthanasia) in companion dogs, as well as being the primary reason why dogs are surrendered to animal shelters and rescue groups. The C-BARQ is designed to measure the prevalence and severity of these behavioral problems. With this data, our trainers can get a full understanding of what your dog is struggling with, and in turn, create a custom plan to successfully modify your dog's behavior

If you are in need of behavior modification, reach out to our training department. We are here to help!

Fall Food - What can I give my dog?

  • DO give your dog unsweetened pumpkin
  • DON’T give your dog pumpkin pie.
  • DO offer your dog cooked, skinless sweet potato
  • DON’T give your dog raw or candied sweet potato
  • DO feed your dog peanut butter without xylitol (also seen on labels as 1,4-anhydro-d-xylitol, Anhydroxylitol, birch bark extract, birch sugar, d-xylitol, xylite, xylitylglucoside, Zylatol)
  • DON’T let your dog eat chocolate or Halloween candy
  • DO share seedless apple slices with your furry friend
  • DON’T let your dog eat caramel apples
  • DO share some plain turkey meat with your dog
  • DON’T pass the turkey bone
  • DON'T share foods that contain onion or garlic
  • Consider Your Dog’s Food Allergies

We love the holidays and we love our dogs. Giving them special fall treats is always fun, but when in doubt don't hesitate to check out its safety. There are many wonderful resources online that have extensive lists on safe and unsafe food for dogs. Happy Fall and treat those pups!
Should I put my dog in a Halloween costume?

There’s no right or wrong answer, as long as you’re not doing any harm. You know your dog’s temperament better than anyone. If they enjoy it, go for it, but give them the chance to say no. What does that look like? Well if they squirm when you are trying to put it on then they may not be enjoying the experience. If they start trying to take it off after you put it on, then they may not be enjoying it. Watch their body language and don't force it!

If you do go for it, make sure there are no hazards. For example, a scarf could get wrapped too tightly, and accessories can be choking hazards. The first thing to keep in mind, always, is the comfort and well-being of your dog. Use your best judgment.
❤ Hope to see you soon! ❤
