February is American Heart Month

NRC is the place to be. The facility has been consistently busy with group fitness class participants, fitness center users, basketball players, tennis program participants, tennis players and swimmers. For those of you that made a New Year's Resolution to be more active, keep up the great work! If you have started slipping on your resolution, NO WORRIES! Just start back up and keep going. Adopting a new behavior takes at least 21 days to become a new habit.
February is American Heart Month. Every year, 1 in 4 deaths are caused by heart disease. Heart disease can often be prevented by making healthy choices and exercising is a great choice. Wear RED to exercise on Friday, February 7 to show your support for women's heart health. All participants will receive an appreciation gift for participating! 
Member Reminders:
  • Help prevent the spread of germs by wiping off exercise equipment with spray bottle after use.
  • Limit your time to 30-minutes on cardiovascular equipment. We are very busy this time of year and would like to give everyone the chance to utilize the equipment.
  • Please return all weight plates, dumbbells, and kettlebells to the original location after use.
  • Use of cell phones is prohibited in all locker rooms.
Katie Hernacki
Group Fitness Instructor
Katie has been teaching Group Fitness for twelve years. She found her love of fitness when she decided to workout to relieve stress. After a year of being a participant in classes, she became certified as a Group Fitness Instructor through AFAA (Aerobics and Fitness Association of America). In the following years, she completed many specialty certifications including TurboKick, PiYo, Hip Hop Hustle, Insanity, Cycle, Piloxing, Werq, and personal training (NASM). She also teaches step and weight classes. 
In addition to her education in fitness, she holds a Mathematics Education Degree from Northern Illinois University and a Master's degree in Education from Olivet Nazarene University. She currently owns her own Math and ACT/SAT tutoring business.
In her spare time, Katie enjoys spending time with her family and friends. Around her home, she enjoys completing remodeling projects and is a huge do-it-yourselfer. Katie has also run in several marathons including the Boston Marathon. She qualified for Boston at the Great Western Marathon here in St. Charles!

  • Record your attendance on the Healthy Heart Challenge sign-in sheet prior to each group fitness class.

Avocado Shrimp Salsa

Prep: 15 mins  | Cook: 5 mins
Serves: 10 
1 tbsp butter
1 lb shrimp large, shells removed
   and deveined
1/4 tsp salt or to taste
1/4 tsp pepper or to taste
 2 tbsp lemon juice freshly squeezed

2 medium avocados peeled
   and chopped
1 cup tomatoes chopped
1 English cucumber chopped
1/3 cup red onion chopped
1/3 cup cilantro fresh, chopped

1/3 cup orange juice freshly squeezed
2 tbsp lime juice freshly squeezed
1 tsp garlic powder
2 cloves garlic minced
1 tsp salt
1 tsp pepper

  1. Melt the butter in a skillet over medium-high heat. Add the shrimp to the skillet and cook on both sides until the shrimp turns pink, should not take more than 2 minutes for the first side and 1 minute for the second side.
  2. Remove the shrimp from the skillet and chop into small pieces. Add chopped shrimp to a large bowl.
  3. To the same bowl add the tomatoes, cucumber, red onion and cilantro.
  4. In another small bowl whisk together the dressing ingredients and pour over the salsa. Toss everything together well.
  5. Serve immediately with tortilla chips.
