Highlights from the October Board Workshop
and ICANN72
The ICANN72 Annual General Meeting (AGM) concluded with a clear focus on the work that lies ahead. In the ICANN Board’s interaction with the constituencies over the week, prioritization was a frequent topic. The ICANN Community, Board, and Organization (Org) all have a role to play in how work is conducted, and transparency in the processes is critical.

ICANN CEO Invited to Speak on a UCLA Panel About New Accountability and Governance Structures
ICANN is recognized as an organization built on a unique multistakeholder model, and ICANN’s President and CEO Göran Marby was invited to speak on a panel focused on public accountability and governance mechanisms across the technical sector. The event was organized by the University of California, Los Angeles’ Institute for Technology, Law, and Policy. Session attendees consisted of mainly law students, but the event was open to anyone who wished to attend.

Marby, along with other industry leaders, considered the regulations and other mechanisms aimed at developing public accountability. The panel discussed fostering public accountability in non-governmental organizations, the role of governments in fostering accountability, the role of stakeholder engagement in governance, and avenues for transparency and efficiency in digital governance. The attendees also had an opportunity to engage with the panelists and ask questions.

You can watch a recording of the event here.
ICANN and NARALO Join Forces to Build a More Digitally Inclusive Internet
In an effort to increase awareness across the region and engage with the technical community on ways to increase the adoption of all top-level domains, ICANN org, in collaboration with the North American Regional At-Large Organization (NARALO) and the Universal Acceptance Steering Group (UASG), are hosting a series of training sessions focused on Universal Acceptance (UA). UA is key to achieving a digitally inclusive Internet by ensuring that all domain names and email addresses – regardless of the script, language, or character length – are accepted by all Internet-enabled applications, devices, and systems.

Four training sessions held in January and February 2022 will provide software developers, programmers, email system administrators, and IT leaders in the region with tools to make their systems and applications UA-ready.

The North America UA Training Series schedule is available here. To register for the series, click here.
Launching the First Ever North America Space
The North America stakeholder engagement team held the first ever North America Space during ICANN72.

The goal of the North America Space is to create an opportunity for the North American community to discuss questions and regional priorities during an ICANN Public Meeting. The session included a welcome from ICANN President and CEO Göran Marby, an update from a few of ICANN’s Board members from the region on the Board’s priorities, a review of the North America Engagement Plan, an update from the NARALO chair, and a discussion with key staff members working on the next round of new generic top-level domains (gTLDs).

Based on input received from the community during the session about the format and topics, the team will continue to develop this space to serve as a venue for the North America community. The team will also consult with community members from other regions to learn about the work they have done to develop their spaces.

ccNSO Role in DNS Abuse Mitigation
The Country Code Names Supporting Organization (ccNSO) recently organized a session about Domain Name System (DNS) abuse mitigation and the potential role of the ccNSO. Both country code top-level domains (ccTLDs) and other stakeholders suggested activities that the ccNSO could undertake to complement existing community work. The ccNSO Council is developing a plan to present to the ccTLD community in early 2022. The goal is to launch the ccNSO activities aimed at mitigating DNS abuse by ICANN73.

Previous ccNSO sessions focused on the experiences of individual ccTLDs with respect to mitigating DNS abuse and what ccTLDs could do at regional and national levels.
