"Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. Dating back to 1865, it was on June 19th that the Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas with news that the war had ended and that the enslaved were now free. Note that this was two and a half years after
President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation
- which had become official January 1, 1863. The Emancipation Proclamation had little impact on the Texans due to the minimal number of Union troops to enforce the new Executive Order. However, with the surrender of General Lee in April of 1865, and the arrival of General Granger’s regiment, the forces were finally strong enough to influence and overcome the resistance"

For many African Americans Juneteenth is marked as a second independence day, a day of true liberation
. The organizer of the Juneteenth March in Middletown,
Erica Hunter,
reminded folks in yesterday's
Middletown Press
that on “July 4, 1776, we were enslaved people, but June 19, 1865, the last bit of the ones who were slaves were set free. That is actually liberation day.”

Racial Reconciliation & Justice Resources
|
|
 |
From the Racial Healing Justice & Reconciliation Ministry Network In the midst of ECCT’s second year of the Season of Racial Healing, Justice and Reconciliation, the twin pandemics of COVID-19 and racism have shone a bright light on a sad truth about life for those on the margins in the United States: People of color live in a society that is systematically biased against them. Black people are three times more likely to be killed by police than white people, and they do not have equal access to quality healthcare, nutritious food and the economic opportunity they need so they and their families can thrive and grow. As Christians, we are called to speak out when we witness injustice, and each month, the Racial Healing, Justice & Reconciliation Ministry Network will share a new resource that provides timely information about the situation on the ground as well as how we can work together to eradicate the sin of racism.
