Letter from Mayor Chris Fiore

THREE DAYS TO GO

Good morning all –

Well, here we are! Three days to go until the polls close at 9pm Tuesday, November 5. Please, if you haven’t voted already, exercise your precious right this Tuesday. Our North Haven Village Polling Place is open from 6am to 9pm this Tuesday. Of particular interest are the 3 Propositions on the ballot. Prop 1 enshrines the right to abortion in our state constitution. Prop 3 for Southampton Town concerns cleanup of Lake Agawam in Southampton Village. PROP 2 concerns itself with clean water. This proposal, if it passes, would increase the Suffolk County sales tax by one eighth of one percent, with 100% helping fund clean water initiatives in the County. Nitrogen-less IA septic systems, which contribute a remarkable solution to the septic leeching that creates brown and red tides, and scallop and marine life kills is just one way this tiny tax increase can help. There are a myriad of additional ways this money can be spent to offset the toxins that contribute to the ill health of our drinking and groundwater. The tax, by the way, would only add 12 cents to every $100 spent. A much needed infusion of good money. Please consider our environment when you vote this Tuesday.

CELL SERVICE REVIEW:  The study we joined, along with 4 other municipalities on the east end, commenced this week. The firm, CityScape, will review and analyze cell service throughout our village and, when complete, give us recommendations for improving (or establishing) service in North Haven and the other end villages. The work should take 90 days to complete. We will report back!

FINANCIAL AUDITS: Beth Kamper and I reviewed the final results of out NYS Controller's office audit just this week. (Very good results, IMHO). We will review in detail at the November BOT meeting. Wednesday, November 20, at 5 pm. In person and Zoom. A second audit, conducted by our accounting firm, focused only on the fiscal year that ended in May 2023. We reviewed that at our work session last week.  Kudos to all for getting us back on track following the unexpected passing of Eileen Touhy.

LOVELADY: You may have seen the Jackson Dodds team at the park this week. Trimming dead limbs off the many trees we have to insure safety, and cutting a base for the North Path. Once the footbridge is approved by the CPF, we will complete the loop across the pond – a half mile path for walking and running. I'm hoping to wrangle some volunteers to spruce up our little shed we left on the property. Parking area is next, then Pollinator Garden next Spring. The parcel cross the street, 3 NORTH HAVEN WAY,  is being pursued by the CPF. Thanks to all of you who wrote to the Town Council people to express your support. Our voices were heard!

Keep your eye out for announcements about a TOY DRIVE coming up for the Holidays. And there will be specific details about LEAF PICKUP on Constant Contact Monday November 11 and again on the 18th. Leaf pickup starts the following Monday, November 25.

SPEED HUMPS:  will be added soon to Fresh Pond and Sunset Beach Roads. Thanks to all of you who communicated your comments at our last Board meeting.

DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME ENDS TONIGHT!  Remember to turn your clocks BACK one hour.

Thanks for all your kind words and support -- much appreciated!

Chris

Mayor

Community News

·      Fresh Pond Speed Radar Update –

The mobile speed radar for North Haven Village was active on Fresh Pond Road from September 20 to October 28. During this period, the radar operated in "ghost mode," meaning it did not display vehicle speeds to drivers.

The recorded average speed was approximately 23 mph in both directions, with an average of 250 vehicles traveling daily in each direction. Notably, about 76% of vehicles remained under 25 mph.

Earlier in the year, from June 23 to July 13, the radar displayed speeds to motorists on Fresh Pond Road, resulting in a slightly lower average speed of around 22 mph, with about 365 vehicles traveling daily in each direction.

In both monitoring periods—whether with visible speeds or in ghost mode—data revealed that westbound traffic in the 26-35 mph range was around 10% higher than eastbound traffic.
