March Students of the Month
Katrina Walchuk
Class of 2021
Senior Katrina Walchuk is planning to attend Fordham University at Lincoln Center next year. Katrina is still waiting to hear back from UPenn and Columbia, but would like to study either Communications or Sociology with a minor in Justice and Peace Studies. Her favorite classes at North Hunterdon have been AP World History, Sewing, and AP Government. Katrina loves learning about history and civics, so those two classes have been extremely interesting to her, and very topical. As for sewing, she discovered one of her main passions, and loved how she was able to express herself artistically in a way she never had before. Katrina has participated in National Honor Society, National Art Honor Society, Social Studies Honor Society, and Spanish Honor Society. She also participated in Unified Social Club and Bowling. Katrina is an officer for Key Club, Spanish Club, and Sewing Club. She also played as a starter on the JV Volleyball team her freshman year. Outside of school, Katrina has served on Tom Malinowski’s Youth Advisory Council for the last three years. She has been babysitting regularly for various local families since seventh grade. Katrina enjoys volunteering at the library where she helps with the Youth programs, such as “Reading Buddies” where they help children with their reading skills. In addition, she volunteers at adoptions for a local organization, New Jersey Puppy Rescue. In her spare time, she enjoys sewing clothing and accessories for her company “KAW by Katrina”, as well as painting and walking her rescue Great Pyrenees, Jamie. Through the pandemic, Katrina has become a lot more involved in her neighborhood community, and has put together a few socially distanced events for everyone, such as a Fourth of July Dog Parade. Some of Katrina’s favorite memories at NHHS include Homecoming dances because it is really fun to see everyone come together and get dressed up. She also loved being a part of Unified, which has given her so many special memories, especially through Unified Bowling, as it allowed her to meet a lot of new people. Finally, the memory that means a lot to Katrina was when our school came together following the Marjory Stoneman Douglas Tragedy and allowed us to show our solidarity. Though it clearly wasn’t a fun event, she thinks it was a really important event in our school that allowed the students to use their voices towards something positive and showed that they were being listened to.
Luke Coster
Class of 2021
Luke Coster has had four memorable years at North Hunterdon. Luke has been a part of many great classes, but derives the most enjoyment from the most difficult classes. This made him love Mr. Halldorson’s AP Calculus BC, Doc Wilhelm’s AP Chemistry, and Mrs. Flynn’s AP Biology. He also really enjoyed classes like Mr. McSweeney’s AP Econ, Mr. Quinn’s AP Physics C, and Mrs. Fetherolf’s English, which are classes with fantastic teachers. Luke is very thankful for being able to help out at the Media Center. If this was a normal year, anyone could easily find him helping to put away books before school and during lunch. Although he is more of an audiobook kind of person, Luke still enjoys spending time at the library, mainly due to the great environment Mrs. Hickson and Mrs. Stark have created. One of the coolest things he was able to do by being a helper at the library was having his own "Luke's Likes" display, which contained books that he enjoyed reading and thought others would enjoy too. Luke is also involved with the Social Studies, Science, and National Honors Societies. He has been active in WHAM, the school’s trivia club, for a couple of years now. Luke’s favorite memories from North are the times when one of his English classes read a play together. This is especially true in Mrs. Fetheroth’s class where she lets her students put on costumes. Luke vividly remembers playing out Antigone’s death scene, with Antigone in a cowboy hat, Haemon in a poncho, and a strong breeze being personified by three people in other miscellaneous costumes. Something Luke is very proud of achieving outside of school is his Eagle Scout rank. His project took nearly three years to complete and involved lots of networking, teamwork, and patience. He fundraised and built a 30 by 30 pavilion, with six tables and eight benches, plus planted 12 trees at Union Township Middle School. Luke loves being active. Be it running, weight lifting, cycling, swimming, or even yoga. When it comes to deciding what major Luke wants for next year, he is torn between biology, chemistry, and mathematics. Ultimately, he chose biochemistry which is often paired with biophysics, so he could take classes in all three; thus, delaying which subject he wants to specialize in for a while longer. Luke is still waiting to hear from colleges but is very excited about next year.
March Athletes of the Month
Nicola Koss
Class of 2021
Nicola Koss has been an integral part of the North Girl’s Swim Team and is the ultimate team player. Nicola was given the Iron Award last year due to her drive and commitment to the team. She is a leader in every sense of the word treating both old and new teammates with respect and kindness. Nicola has a voracious work ethic and is an outstanding contributor in every meet, placing first in most events she swims. She is never one to complain about an event she is being asked to swim and will always take one for the team. Nicola’s strongest skills in swimming are her freestyle events. Since the meet schedule is different this year, the girls do not have any big competitions coming up besides dual meets for high schools. Last year, Nicola went to the Skyland Championships, where she broke the school record and placed first in the 100 free and placed second in the 200 free. At the Hunterdon/Warren/Sussex Championship, Nicola came in first and broke the meet record for the 200 free. She also came in first for the 100 free and broke both the North record, for a second time, and the meet record. Nicola was also on the 200 free relay which broke North´s record and the 400 free relay which broke both the North and meet record. Nicola was also named MVP for the Hunterdon/Warren/ Sussex meet. She went to MOCs where she placed fifth in the 100 free and 12th in the 200 free. Currently, Nicola holds the 50 free record for North, in addition to the 100 free and the free relay records. She has been competitively swimming for 12 years for HCY and Blue Eagle and currently is on STAC where she holds several records. Nicola has already signed a Letter of Intent to swim at Iona College where she plans on majoring in Criminal Justice. Coach Baratta says, “She is a true gem who will be sorely missed!”
Mackenzye Nance
Class of 2021
Senior Mackenzye Nance has been fencing for the past four years. Mackenzye was the top saber fencer on the squad this year with ten victories and only seven defeats. She went undefeated against Voorhees (3-0)! Mackenzye believes her strongest skill is to have fun because to her that is the most important thing to have in a sport or any activity. She is an athlete that never gives up. The team competed in the Skylands Tournament, which was the only tournament of this year, but the team had fun. They had some close calls during the tournament, the last one North lost by one, leaving the score at 13 - 14.  Mackenzye is very proud of being on the varsity team. In the past, the team had a lot of good players, so the most she competed on varsity was being a substitute. This year, while on varsity, Mackenzye won the majority of her bouts. Next year, she plans on going into the military, and is considering the Marines. She would like to continue fencing, after high school, since it really is fun. Mackenzye is a member of German Club. She has an interest in different languages and German is the language she is trying to better. Mackenzye had passed the Seal of Biliteracy Exam at an Intermediate level, which she is proud of, but would like to get to an Advanced level. Mackenzye would like to send a message to her teammates. “Thanks for a great year! And remember to have fun!" The coaches and players wish Mackenzye well next year! They will miss her on the team and her amazing computer animations for the fencing banquets.
