March Students of the Month
WINSTON HESS
Class of 2022

Senior Winston Hess has enjoyed the past four years at North Hunterdon. Winston’s favorite classes at North were Economics and Engineering. He really enjoyed his teachers for both classes and found he could really relate to everything he learned. Winston also enjoyed his World History class with Mrs. Niznik last year. Mrs. Niznik did a great job interacting with students, even with half the year dedicated to virtual learning. Winston played football in the fall for North and is now playing Track and Field in the spring, throwing discus and shotput. He is a member of National Honor Society and the Interact Club. Outside of school, Winston works at an under the table job with his grandmother at a farm. He loves spending time with her because she is fun to hang out with. Next year, Winston plans to attend either Virginia Tech or Clemson University where he will major in Construction Engineering and Management. Winston feels he did a great job making his high school experience the best it could be. Even though COVID messed with his two middle years at North, he is grateful that he has had the opportunity to be in school as much as he was. Winston’s favorite memories these past four years were hanging out with his friends at sports practices and talking with Mrs. Niznik and Mr. McSweeney about current events. He also enjoyed problem solving in Engineering with Mr. McKinnon.

LAUREN SALEMO
Class of 2022

Lauren Salemo will be attending Northeastern University next year to study Journalism. One of Lauren’s favorite classes was AP World History with Mr. Yocum. She loved learning about history from the perspective of other cultures and understanding how the past has influenced so much of the present. Another of Lauren’s favorite classes was AP US Government and Politics with Mr. Franzyshen. She enjoyed learning about aspects of government and applying it to contemporary issues as well as listening to her classmates’ viewpoints on current events. Lauren has been a part of the soccer program at North Hunterdon since freshman year and has played for the varsity team her junior year and senior year. Lauren is the co-Editor in Chief of Northern Lights Art and Literary Magazine that publishes student art and poetry in quarterly blogs and an annual magazine. She is a member of National Honor Society along with English, Spanish, and Social Studies Honor Societies. Outside of North, Lauren plays for a club soccer team in the winter and spring. Some of her favorite memories at North were spending time with friends and anything involving sports. Going to football games and playing soccer games are memories she will cherish forever. Lauren loved being able to play her favorite sport with some of her best friends all four years at North. She is very thankful for all her classmates, teachers, and coaches that have made the past four years so formative as a student and an athlete.
March Athletes of the Month
GINA DESANCTIS
Class of 2022

Senior Gina Desanctis started on the Dance Team at North her freshman year. Gina has been on the Varsity team for the last four years and is the most recent recipient for the Iron Award. While she has improved all of her skills this season, her strongest skills include pom skills and jumps. Gina prefers to do leaps over turns when dancing. Calypsos and toe touches are also her favorites to perform. For the first time in program history, the North Dance Team competed in two styles of dance: Pom and Jazz. The team attended three competitions this year at Lakeland High School, Pascack Valley High School, and Ramapo College. They placed first in Pom and third in Jazz. Gina was accepted into Stockton University in August. She wants to major in Early Childhood Education and possibly have a dual-enrollment in Elementary Education. Gina plans to try out for Stockton University’s dance team next year. Go Ospreys! Outside of dance, Gina is a member of National Honor Society, Social Studies Honor Society, and National Technical Honor Society. The National Technical Honor Society is through Hunterdon County Polytech where Gina is part of the Principles of Teaching Program. Through this program, she writes lesson plans and teaches the preschoolers that go to the laboratory school there. North Hunterdon helped Gina make a lot of memories and taught her important life skills. She would like to say “thank you” to everyone at North, Polytech, and her family who supported her and gave her the opportunity to become who she is today. Gina especially wants to thank her coaches and teammates for making this season the best season she has ever had.
RYAN WILBUR
Class of 2022

Senior Ryan Wilbur swims distance freestyle for the North Hunterdon Swim Team. Ryan recently swam the 500 yard freestyle at the Meet of Champions, where he swam his record of 4:42:56. Ryan has been swimming competitively for ten years on various different teams. He originally swam for the Hunterdon County YMCA for seven years, then moved to the Somerset Hills YMCA, and now swims for the Greater Somerset County YMCA. Ryan will attend the YMCA Nationals in Greensborough, NC the last week of March where he will swim the 500, 1000, and 1650 yard freestyle. When not swimming, Ryan enjoyed being a member of Model UN his previous years at North. He is an out of district student, so Ryan came to North knowing very few people. However, the environment at North has been very welcoming and he has made many friends the past few years. The swim team has also had a great team environment that makes everyone feel welcomed. Next year, Ryan is planning on attending NJIT and will continue to swim there. He is planning on majoring in Biomedical Engineering.
