Greetings North Star Families!

As we move through the school year, we want to take a moment to highlight just how important consistent attendance is for our students. Middle school is a time of rapid growth — academically, socially, and emotionally — and each day in class plays a vital role in helping students stay connected and confident in their learning. Each school day builds on the last, and missing even a few can make it hard for students to catch up. Regular attendance helps students stay engaged in learning, build strong study habits, and feel connected to their teachers and peers. Being present supports academic growth, confidence, and social development, while consistent attendance sets students up for long-term success in high school and beyond.

Attendance and Student Success – Key Statistics

  • Students who miss just two days per month are considered chronically absent — and this can lead to lower grades and test scores.
  • Chronically absent middle school students are more than twice as likely to fail a course than those with good attendance.
  • Missing 10% or more of the school year is linked to lower reading and math proficiency and a higher risk of dropping out before high school graduation.
  • Even students with good grades can struggle long-term if they are frequently absent — attendance is one of the strongest predictors of academic success and graduation.

While we understand that Wisconsin weather can make it difficult to avoid illness, we kindly ask that you remain mindful of our attendance procedures—particularly when it comes to planning vacations, which we respectfully request be limited whenever possible. By keeping open communication between home and school, we can work together to support consistent attendance and student success.

Yours in service,

Kristin Higgins

Need a second chance?

Thursday, October 16th is Picture Retake Day. If your student would like a retake or has not had their picture taken yet this year, this is the last opportunity to be photographed.

North will be celebrating Red Ribbon week from October 27-30th with the theme “Life is a puzzle, solve it drug free!” This theme encourages students to recognize that every choice, including staying drug-free, builds toward a stronger, brighter future.

As part of our celebration we will have a different theme for dressing up each day of Red Ribbon Week. We encourage all students and staff to dress up each day and show their support of a drug free and healthy lifestyle.  We hope to see you all showing off your school spirit in support of Red Ribbon Week!
