Deal Analysis

A new deal will be analyzed by one of our expert players next week.

Ask the Expert

Your hand is ♠QT82 75 Q987 ♣A85. Your partner is the dealer and the bidding goes:

2C----2S----Dbl----P

3H----P-----3N-----P

4D----P-----?

What is your call?

John Dickenson: This auction went off the rails with the third call. My double shows a bust hand - no A or K, no two Q’s. Pass would have shown values.

Bill Bauer. 5D. Partner may carry on in hearts or diamonds because we have shown values with our double of 2S. I definitely would not give a false preference by bidding 4H.

Elaine Clair. I would never double with that hand. In my system that shows a bust hand and pass shows values. I can’t give you an answer without seeing opener’s hand.

Mitch Snyder. I wish I knew what my double meant to partner. I like my hand and think 6D may be the place to be. I'm bidding my club control.

John Dickenson. Yeah, I abstain. I teach that there is no bid one can make in bridge that erases the meaning of a previous call one made. I have lied to my partner when I showed a bust hand and I have no idea what to do now. 5D or even 6D could be right but there is no way to put the train back on the track once I derailed it.

Dennis O’Brien. This might be the hand bid where I bid 2NT on my first bid. Partner is showing a strong 6-5 hand. I will bid 6D.

Email your questions, or a pesky hand, or something you’d like to know about bidding or playing to Toysie Walker. She will forward them to the panel, one will be chosen, and the question and answers will be printed in the following week’s newsletter.
