North American Pairs (NAP)

The North American Pairs is a competition where each District selects representatives to compete at the Spring North American Bridge Championship (NABC).

The event begins with qualifying games in Clubs during June, July and August. These games are followed by District-level competitions to select players for the NABC. Financial subsidies are provided by the ACBL to the top two pairs in each flight in each District to offset the cost of travel to the NABC.

This year there will be 4 flights:

  • Championship: Open to any player
  • A: Open to players with less than 6000 masterpoints
  • B: Open to players with less than 3000 masterpoints
  • C: Open to Non-life masters with less than 750 masterpoints

Our first club level qualifying games will be held this week. Additional qualifying games will be held the week of June 23, and then again in July and August. You can check the schedule on our website for specific dates.

Hand Analysis

A new hand will be analyzed by one of our expert players next week.

Ask the Expert

Matchpoints, N/S quiet throughout auction, East holds KJ954 KQJ107 K9 J.

The bidding goes: 1C - 1S, 2C - ? What do the rebids of 2H, 3H and 4H mean?

Or do you favor another call?

Elaine Clair. I would bid 3H showing 5-5 in the majors and a game forcing hand. To me, 2H would be a one round force and 4H would be at least 6-5 and unsuitable for notrump since you’ve gone past 3NT. With an invitational hand I would go through New Minor Forcing.

John Dickenson. I think 2H is forcing unless you play extended New Minor Forcing. Otherwise it is pass/correct.

Bill Bauer. 2H is not forcing since opener rebid their suit. And hearts may be a 4-card suit. (Because east responded 1S and not 1H, east must have 5 spades.) 3H shows at least 5-5 and is invitational to game. 4H shows at least 5-5 willing to play in game in the major of partner's choice.

Dennis O’Brien. With my aceless hand and no club fit, I'm ruling out slam. I would bid 4H for partner to choose his best major.

Email your questions, or a pesky hand, or something you’d like to know about bidding or playing to Toysie Walker. She will forward them to the panel, one will be chosen, and the question and answers will be printed in the following week’s newsletter.
