Ask the Expert
Both sides vulnerable, MPs, you are in first seat holding Q2 J963 6 AK9843. What is your call?
Bill Bauer. I am an aggressive preemptor so I would open 3C.
John Dickenson. I would open 1C intending to raise 1H by partner to 2H or rebid 2C over 1D, 1S, or 1N response.
Elaine Clair. I would open 1C even though it’s not quite the rule of 22. With that shape and nice club suit and easy rebid I want to get in there immediately.
Mitch Snyder. I would open 1C, planning to raise hearts or rebid clubs. Part of what makes this a 1C opener is an easy second bid.
Dennis O’Brien. We teach our Shuffle & Deal folks not to preempt with a side four card major, so I'm not doing it either. You have a great way to describe this hand: Pass first and then bid clubs when next your turn.
Email your questions, or a pesky hand, or something you’d like to know about bidding or playing to Toysie Walker. She will forward them to the panel, one will be chosen, and the question and answers will be printed in the following week’s newsletter.
