Superintendent's Letter

Dear North Penn Community,

Welcome to the 2023-2024 school year! I enjoyed visiting our schools over the past few weeks, welcoming students and chatting with staff. The smiles and enthusiasm were infectious as everyone ensured that we were off to a good start. Everyone, that is, other than…the weather!

Because of high temperatures during the second week of classes, our middle school students, families and staff did not have ideal conditions in their schools. Unfortunately, these buildings are not fully air conditioned, but do have relief in certain areas. For these buildings, we decided to move to hybrid instruction and early dismissals. We have the technology and skills in place to swiftly and effectively switch learning formats when needed. The daytime outdoor temperature is not the only factor when deciding to pivot due to heat. The nighttime temperatures, humidity, and duration of the heat are all considered in the process.

There were also other buildings with spaces that were uncomfortable. This is the reality of what this time of year is like combined with the age and condition of some of our buildings. NPSD has a 10-year capital plan to address many of the concerns. However, some of the needs, such as air conditioning at the middle schools, need to wait until after renovations to NPHS are complete. Whether the high school is re-imagined (option 1) to include 9th grade or refurbished (option 2), our middle schools also need major renovations, and any air conditioning installed now would be destroyed in the process at a loss in excess of $30 million.

It is very important that the North Penn community is engaged in the conversations around the NPHS renovations and all of the challenges before us. I continue to encourage you to look to the Re-Imagine website to stay informed.

Next week, the third week of school, temperatures are forecasted to cool off but the action in our schools figuratively heats up! From Back to School Nights to Fall Festivals to Home and School Meetings, it’s a busy time for our families and staff. And don’t forget, our talented middle school combined chorus is performing at a Phillies game on Saturday, September 23rd. There are still seats available to cheer on the Phillies and our students! If you or someone you know is interested, click here.

Take Care,

Todd M. Bauer, Ed.D.

Did you Know?

Did you know that Penndale Middle School is home to the Independent Learning Center? Students with special needs can visit the Independent Learning Center to learn skills for independent living and employment. The center helps students who may need repetition to help practice things like making a bed, cooking, doing laundry, and foster independence for these students. Students at Penndale, Pennfield, Pennbrook, and North Penn High School are able to visit the center and work on their skills.

School Nutrition Services

Breakfast is free for all North Penn students for the 2023-2024 school year, regardless of financial status! Additionally, families who qualify for free or reduced meals will receive free lunch for the school year. Families are encouraged to apply for meal benefits, even if they are unsure if they qualify. Applications are available at the link below or by paper copy in every school's main office. The School Nutrition Services department is also hiring! Come work with us and help feed our students. Inclusive Practices

Supporting the Needs of All Learners

The North Penn School District is committed to creating a culturally responsive learning environment in which identity and culture are central to learning. Culturally proficient teaching recognizes the importance of including students' cultural references in all aspects of learning and understands the impact of one's own cultural beliefs on teaching practices.

Simultaneously, the school district has also been committed to inclusion in special education. The tenets of inclusion include supporting students with disabilities through individual learning goals, accommodations, and modifications so that they are able to access the general education curriculum within the general education classroom and be held to the same high expectation as their peers.

While both of these initiatives have been beneficial for our students, they have multiple identities and ways of being which cannot be separated.

Our equity work has evolved to reflect the importance of this interplay and is described as Cultural Proficient, Equity, and Inclusion. The image below of Inclusive Education captures the intersectionality of the tenets of cultural proficiency and inclusive instructional strategies.

We need your help. Every school district across the state is experiencing a shortage of substitute teachers, which can impact student learning. If you have a four-year degree and enjoy working with children and teens, you can help us by joining the North Penn School District as a substitute teacher!

In addition to paying the highest rate in the county (starting at $180 per day; $170/day for guest teachers), we also provide great flexibility regarding daily assignments. You can share your availability and work as it fits your schedule. We will also provide training!
