December news & updates
Volume 11 • Issue 1
Dear Community . . .
It was this time last year when I sat down with a North Penn High School (NPHS) student who was writing a story for the Knight Crier about my decade as North Penn School District (NPSD) Superintendent, a milestone I reached just before the shut down of schools in March. We talked about what I felt were some of North Penn’s greatest accomplishments and challenges during my tenure, and we discussed what was on the horizon for this great school district.

Of course it would have been impossible to accurately predict what March would bring and the toll that this pandemic would take on students, staff, families and education as a whole. Instead I spoke about renovations at Knapp Elementary School and Crawford Stadium, improving academic achievement for all students, and the possibility of grade reconfiguration and the addition of a ninth grade center at a renovated NPHS.

Though much of that work continued despite COVID-19, endeavors like the ninth grade center are on the back burner for now. There is simply too much work to be done in keeping our students and staff safe, in making hybrid learning the best it can be, and in moving forward through the pandemic.

And while there seems to be a collective sigh of relief (including my own) that the year 2020 is almost over, I would be remiss to not also think back with much pride on how the North Penn School District faced and overcame overwhelming challenges this past year. I truly believe that with the technology we have in place and with the expertise and dedication of staff that we are as best positioned as we can be for both virtual and in-person learning and we can smoothly transition as needed between the two models. While many parents choose to have their students learning at home, I am pleased that we can offer in-school learning for those students who truly need this opportunity.

I hope that as you reflect on 2020 that you might find some bright spots as well. Please continue to be safe and stay North Penn Strong.

Sincerely,
Curtis R. Dietrich, Ed.D.
Superintendent, NPSD

P.S.

As always, NPSD students helped me to create our annual holiday message. Each year I am amazed by the talent of our students and our art teachers who encourage their creativity. Enjoy!

Important Information and Reminders Regarding COVID-19
We are excited to announce that we are working with the Montgomery County Office of Public Health, supported by the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), to provide rapid testing to staff and potentially a small number of students upon return to school in January. NPSD is proud to be selected for this pilot testing program. Details about this great opportunity are being finalized and will be announced soon.

Let's hear it for our virtual vocab victors!
"This year I decided to use vocabulary.com for the first time to get my students more engaged and motivated to learn new words and build their word knowledge skills. We have been using this program for a couple of months now. In mid-November, my student Tyler R. decided to get really competitive with it, and he earned over 200,00 points in ONE night! So I gave him a huge shoutout and that created a spark. Many students started going above and beyond in their vocab practice. ALL three classes have earned over 1 MILLION POINTS each! However, the MOST exciting part is that we ranked #1 out of the schools in the Division III of Pennsylvania that are also using this website!"

NPSD School Nutrition Services Dept. Awarded $85K Grant to Enhance Free Curbside Meal Program
The grant was provided by Share Our Strength as part of its No Kid Hungry campaign to support critical work in ending childhood hunger through NPSD's free curbside meal pick-up program during COVID-19. Funds from the grant will be used to purchase a refrigerated box truck to deliver meal bundles to families in need who are unable to visit curbside locations.
North Penn High School Students Rank in National Merit Scholarship Program
Twelve NPHS students were named semifinalists and 17 were recognized as commended students in the 66th Annual National Merit Scholarship Program, an academic competition for recognition and scholarships that began in 1955. High school students enter the National Merit Program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test—which serves as an initial screen of approximately 1.5 million entrants each year—and by meeting published program entry and participation requirements.
Out of the 1.5 million students who took the qualifying test, approximately 16,000 are named semifinalists in the country. Selected semifinalist students represent less than one percent of high school seniors in the country.

About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Although they will not continue in the competition, Commended Students placed among the top 50,000 scorers.

Crawford Stadium and Knapp Elementary Project Updates
Long anticipated construction projects at Knapp Elementary School and Crawford Stadium broke ground over the summer and are well underway.

Check out how the projects are going as William Slawter, Construction Manager of ICS; Tom Schneider, NPSD Director of Facilities and Operations; and Dan Linski, NPSD Supervisor of Environmental and Custodial Services, provide an update on these additions and renovations.

Ed. Foundation keeps #NorthPennStrong at most successful golf outing to date
Despite the challenges of holding an event during a pandemic, the North Penn community came together once again to show that we are #NorthPennStong at the NPSD Educational Foundation's 19th Annual Golf Classic.

With the help of 38 sponsors and 114 golfers, the Foundation raised more than $31,000 to continue their efforts to support North Penn teachers and students, making this the most successful golf outing to date.
