The NRH Fire Department will hold a traditional housing ceremony to put a new fire apparatus into service at 4 p.m. on November 4 at Fire Station #2, located at 4001 Rufe Snow Drive.
The department is replacing Unit 945, a "quint" which has been in service since 1997. A brief dedication ceremony will be held and the new "quint" will receive its first bath and be pushed into the station. This tradition dates back to the 18th century when the horses that drew the apparatus had no reverse gear. Dignitaries and citizens in the neighborhood surrounding the station are invited to attend. Refreshments will follow the event.
A "quint" is a fire-service apparatus that serves the dual purpose of an engine and a ladder truck. The name "quint" refers to the five functions that a quint provides - pump, water tank, fire hose, aerial device, and ground ladders.
