Departmental Weekly Update
Weekly Summary

  • The Department and Kueny Architects held a pre-bid meeting and tour for contractors for the Shorewood Fire Station 83 Remodel Project on August 21. The event was well attended. Bids are due September 4.
  • Phase 1 of the remodel project at Whitefish Bay Station 84 continues. Weekly meetings are held with the contractor regarding the project. Based on experiences in Phase 1 and feedback from members working in the station, the Department is seeking approval from the Village of Whitefish Bay to place a temporary office/living quarters on the south parking lot of the station for Phase 2 of the project. Vehicles will continue to be stored in the station, but the firefighters will generally occupy the temporary unit if approved. The Whitefish Bay Village Board will consider this request on Monday August 26.
  • The Department will hold a swearing in for newly promoted members, recognize several retired members and also recognize members who responded to the White Oaks Apartment Fire on August 26 at 8:30 AM at Fire Station 81 in Brown Deer. Everyone is invited to attend.
  • Chief Whitaker provided testimony at the Milwaukee County Capital Improvement Committee Meeting on August 20 supporting the County's funding of replacement of three cardiac monitor/defibrillators for the Department's ALS Transport Units in 2020. The proposal has the County purchasing 49 of these units at approximately $30,000 per unit in 2020. The Committee's report will recommend purchase of these units. That report is forwarded to the County Executive and County Board Finance Committee for consideration later this month.
  • The Department participated in a security planning event at a local synagogue this week.
  • The Department responded to two suspicious package reports at local synagogue's this week. Both packages were evaluated by the Milwaukee Regional Hazardous Materials Team and the Milwaukee County Sheriff Bomb Squad and found to not be a threat.
  • Staff completed four days of interviews for candidates for firefighter/emt positions this week. The Fire Commission will interview the top candidates to form an eligibility list as the next step in the process. Hiring from this list is expected in 2020.
  • The Fire Commission will meet on August 26 to consider approving the completion of probationary periods for several members.
  • The Department will open a community input survey for all members of the community in the coming week to help us update the organization's strategic plan for the next three years. The survey will be done online and be made available on our website and through social media.
