This Coach Shines!
We would like to highlight not only an inspirational coach but also an impressive human being - Bill Adams.
For his entire life sports have been at the center for Bill, playing college basketball and baseball and going on to get drafted by the San Francisco Giants in 1972. Post professional baseball career, he continued to keep sports at the forefront, not only coaching but also refereeing for 53 years.
Upon retirement Adams began volunteering with Special Olympics in 2020, teaching basketball skills at the Beverly YMCA and pickleball at the Peabody YMCA. He has also been coaching junior softball for the past 3 years. When asked about what motivated him to become involved with the Special Olympics, he said, aside from simply his love for sports, “I feel my life has been so wonderful I need to give back.”
He is truly able to connect with and motivate the athletes through his genuine love and excitement for sports. When commenting on what he wishes to achieve by coaching, he said, “The most important thing to me is how many smiles you get on their faces.” Coach Bill not only wants the athletes to improve and learn the skills they need but also prioritizes the most important thing, as he says at the end of every practice in the group huddle, “Have fun!”
