NLF Elevator Speech
Whenever someone asks you what NLF does, here is what I like to say. This brief text opens the door for the other person to say, "Tell me more!"

We help build and train leaders and provide valuable connections to help them succeed. We also strive to publicly recognize truly outstanding leaders among us.
Greetings from your NLF Chair Bob Golden:
Recruiting the right volunteers
In municipal government, one of the hardest, and in my opinion, one of the most critical jobs we have, is to recruit the best folks we can, whether to serve on our boards & commissions or to run for elected office. These people do not necessarily need to be like-minded but they do need to be open-minded.
We don't have to sacrifice our principles but we do have to be willing to seek an appropriate compromise, resulting in a satisfactory outcome. The following are my 4 B's of trying to find the "right stuff" for my city.
Be enthusiastic: I like to find volunteers who are excited about the possibility of making a difference, not folks who have an axe to grind or an agenda to push but those who have an honest interest in doing what is best for the entire community. Finding that right fit (personality/interest versus position) can be challenging but no one said it was going to be easy.
*  Be engaged: I want folks who do more than simply show up and attend the meetings. I need volunteers who prepare for meetings, ask questions, get involved in the discussions, and help make appropriate recommendations/decisions for the best possible outcomes.
*  Be supportive: Once a decision has been made, it is important for all to get behind it and move forward as one. The mayor, council and staff need to implement the action and support it in the most positive manner possible.
*  Be visible: My volunteers are the "movers and shakers" of my community and they need to be ready and willing to seek input and provide feedback to fellow citizens. None of us operates in a vacuum but the more transparency we promote the better understanding we will get as a result of our collective actions.
Although I certainly do not claim to be an expert in this area, I do take pride in the Haslet citizens who have stepped up to the plate and serve in these very important positions of leadership in our community. We have a much better place to live, work, and raise our families because of the dedication of our volunteers.
I look forward to seeing everyone at our June 13 breakfast meeting. Don't forget the new venue, the Hurst Conference Center. We have a very interesting speaker and program and I hope you can join us.
As always, if you need me, I can be reached at bgolden@haslet.org or my cell is 817-690-1044.

Community leaders attend ICSC in Las Vegas
Our Northeast Tarrant area economic development directors and many of our elected city officials have returned from the ICSC (International Council of Shopping Centers) convention in Las Vegas May 21-24. Also attending were representatives from the Grapevine and HEB chambers of commerce.
ICSC is not an official function related to NLF. We are sharing this information because so many of us are interested in quality economic development.
We look forward to learning about the positive connections they made to continue the amazing growth of new restaurants and retail in our area.
