Missionary visit - on Wednesday, Sept. 25, First UMC Watertown will have the privilege of hosting Dr. & Mrs. Emmanuel Mefor for an evening.

FUMC has been a supporting congregation for Mrs. Mefor, a nurse midwife serving in Zimbabwe, for several years now and we are delighted that they are able to be with us.

The evening will start with a potluck dinner at 5:30, followed by a presentation by the Mefors at 6:30. Table service and drinks will be provided; bring a dish to share and your curiosity about what our church is doing to serve the community in Zimbabwe!

Mrs. Mefor is a missionary with the General Board of Global Ministries of The United Methodist Church assigned to Old Mutare Hospital, Zimbabwe, utilizing her skills as a nurse mid-wife.

Florence is married to Dr. Emmanuel Mefor, also a GBGM missionary. They have graciously hosted many UMVIM teams at the mission hospital Mutambara, Zimbabwe, including from our Annual Conference. Among her most cherished accomplishments, Florence set up a feeding program for pregnant women living at the mission while they await the delivery of their high risk babies. This proved so successful in improving outcomes of pregnancy that it was adopted as a model by the government to be implemented at other hospitals! She also assists her husband in other aspects of care at the hospital, especially operative care of patients with eye disease.

Florence describes her mission as follows: “God’s mission is being carried out as numerous women and children are being cared for and given higher chances of survival,” she says. “My ministry is to help save lives, improve failing sights, and general well-being of patients,” Florence shares. “God’s hands are at work – recently patients with severe diarrhea and shock from an area of epidemic were rushed in for treatment. Their survival was miraculous because their recovery was not due to our nursing expertise. A child of seven years had a snakebite and it was five days before he got to the hospital. He had a clotting deficiency and was bleeding from every point. God was so merciful as on the fourth day he was up and about.”



What a joy it has been for our congregation to be a part of this work! Praise God!

UMVIM Team Leader Training – Mission Leadership

Are you interested in leading mission journeys, either locally or abroad? This intensive training session, led by Ray Yarnell, NEJ Volunteers in Mission Coordinator, will equip you with essential skills, including:

• Mission Safety and Health
• Cultural Competency
• Understanding Poverty
• Types of Mission Service
• Preparing for Your Journey

By the end of this session, you'll have the tools and confidence needed to effectively lead mission journeys. Lunch and all training materials are included.

Early Response Team (ERT) Basic Training

Date: October 5th

Location: Upper New York Conference Center, Liverpool, NY

Time: 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM EST

Early Response Teams (ERTs) provide critical assistance in the aftermath of disasters, focusing on essential tasks like tarping roofs and minor repairs. This training will teach you how to support disaster survivors effectively, covering:

• Phases of Disaster Response
• Safety Protocols
• Essential Skills (e.g., roof tarping, debris removal, cleaning out flooded homes)

After completing the training and passing a background check, you’ll be eligible for a three-year ERT badge. This training is ideal for those physically capable of responding to natural disasters, both locally and beyond.

The Ogdensburg United Methodist Church at 627 Caroline Street Ogdensburg will be having a Spaghetti and Meatball Dinner on Saturday, September 21st from 4:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.  

The cost is $12.00. Eat in or take out.
