Hayward Spanish Church Food Pantry
Every Wednesday, the Hayward Spanish church hosts an all-day food pantry – one of the largest food distribution events in the NCC. Each week about 350 families receive groceries, and people begin lining up more than two hours before the 8:30 a.m. opening.

During the past nine years, the church's food distribution program has grown under the leadership of Irma Navarro, its ACS director. About 35 church and community volunteers work together to make sure the guests receive high-quality food in a clean, safe, and friendly environment.

“If you ask people in the community where the Seventh-day Adventist Church is, everybody knows the address because many people come to receive food," said Pastor Ramon Verduzco. "We have a very good relationship with them.”
ACS Food Pantry Grants
This spring, 15 NCC churches received grants for their food pantries from NCC Adventist Community Services (ACS), which received money from a newly formed partnership between the North American Division ACS and ADRA International. “It’s been good to see two major Adventist ministries partner together in response to the desperate need of our communities,” said James Lim, NCC ACS director.

Together, these churches – Camino, Carmichael, Crescent City, Fairfield Community, Hayward Spanish, Lincoln Amazing Grace, Lockeford, Oakland Market Street, Olivehurst, Orangevale, Palo Cedro, Penn Valley, Ukiah, Vallejo Berea, and Valley Community – provide food for more than 14,500 people each month.
Thank You!
The Membership Assistance Fund has distributed $25,000 – of the $40,685 raised – to 250 families in 31 NCC churches. “That gift actually helped us toward keeping our home,” said one recipient. “I haven't been able to work for a few months now, and we take that gift as a very sweet blessing from Jesus and the brothers and sisters in our church family who helped make that possible for us.”

“We greatly appreciate our many compassionate givers, as well as the work of Executive Secretary Jose Marin, Executive Administrative Assistant Kim Boutté, and Associate Treasurer Allan Willmott for their efforts to fund these many requests in such a short amount of time,” said Laurie Trujillo, communication and development director.

The goal of the Membership Assistance Fund was to raise $20,000 in order to provide $100 to 200 Adventist families in the NCC. “God blessed this endeavor, and the goal was achieved in just over two months,” said President Marc Woodson. “Now, because of the $20,000 matching gift challenge, the initiative has been able to fund 100 percent of the requests with some left over to help even more families in need.”
Katie Trujillo Engaged Her Calling to Ministry
More than 570 people have watched a recording of last Sabbath's sermon at the Roseville church, which was presented by Laurie Trujillo, director of communication and development, and her four-year-old daughter, Katie.
On Sabbath morning, Katie said: “Mommy, I want to be your assistant today and help tell people about Jesus.”

Trujillo was happy to have a partner to help her present several science experiments as sermon illustrations. “My daughter and I are a team, and she loves to help me,” she said. “Based on past experience, I knew I had had to include her.”

Katie engaged her calling to ministry, and so can you!

Each week for the next several months, Northern Lights will feature a person in the NCC who is engaging his or her calling to ministry. Please send suggestions to julie.lorenz@nccsda.com.
