Northern Middlesex YMCA Honors Wesleyan University with Community Impact Award

MIDDLETOWN, CT — The Northern Middlesex YMCA proudly recognized Wesleyan University with its 2026 Community Impact Award during the YMCA's Annual Meeting, celebrating a partnership that continues to strengthen youth development, education, community engagement, and organizational excellence throughout the Greater Middletown community.

For years, Wesleyan University faculty, staff, and students have played an important role in supporting YMCA programs and initiatives, creating opportunities that benefit children, families, YMCA staff, and the community as a whole.

One area of impact has been the University's support of YMCA youth development programs. Through partnerships with Wesleyan faculty members including Dr. Andrea Roberts and Dr. Emmy Brockman, children enrolled in YMCA preschool and school-age programs have gained access to engaging STEM, music, and enrichment experiences that spark curiosity and inspire learning.

"One of the things that makes this partnership so meaningful is that it's truly students helping students," said School Age & Teen Care Director Ben Carlson. "Our children receive high-quality STEM programming and positive role models, while Wesleyan students gain valuable hands-on experience, learn through service, and make a meaningful impact in our community."

Carlson noted that Wesleyan students bring energy, enthusiasm, and innovative learning opportunities into YMCA programs while developing skills that will support them in their future careers.

Beyond youth programming, Wesleyan University has demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to supporting the YMCA's mission and long-term future. During the Annual Meeting, YMCA President & CEO Michele Rulnick highlighted the contributions of several Wesleyan leaders whose partnership has strengthened the organization in significant ways.

Through the leadership of Karen Warren, Wesleyan partnered with the YMCA on a grant initiative that helped secure nearly $200,000 in technology and infrastructure improvements for the YMCA's downtown Middletown facility.

Rulnick also recognized Alan Rubacha, Wesleyan's Associate Vice President for Facilities, for his ongoing service on the YMCA's Building Committee and his invaluable guidance as the YMCA prepares for its transformational facility renovation and expansion project.

"Alan has been an incredible resource to the YMCA," said Rulnick. "Whether we're facing facility challenges, evaluating complex building systems, or planning for the future, he brings expertise, responsiveness, and a genuine desire to help. He embodies the culture of Wesleyan—partnership rooted in humility, generosity, and a commitment to community."

From providing educational opportunities for children to offering strategic guidance, technical expertise, and institutional support, Wesleyan University's partnership exemplifies the power of collaboration in creating stronger communities.

"The relationship we've built with Wesleyan continues to grow and evolve," said Carlson. "We're excited about what we've accomplished together and even more excited about what we'll continue to accomplish in the years ahead."

The Northern Middlesex YMCA Community Impact Award recognizes organizations whose leadership, service, and partnership create lasting positive change for individuals and families throughout the region. Wesleyan University's commitment to education, service, and community engagement makes it a deserving recipient of this year's honor.
