What a great week!! I love this fall season and all the abundant joy it brings. I spent some quality time at Canyon Park Middle School earlier this week to celebrate International Walk to School Day. It was really fun to greet our student walkers and give them a high five as they arrived on campus. I love the energy of our middle school students and their unbridled enthusiasm for all things innovative and interesting. It is such a fabulous and abundant fall season!!

This week, during our Board Study Session, we heard from the Enrollment Demographic Task Force (EDTF) and Les Kendrick, our district demographic consultant of many years. The  current demographic report  is very informative and tells a continued story of growth for our school district.

Sixteen Northshore School District students received the designation of Semifinalist in the 2019 National Merit Scholarship competition. Forty-nine Northshore students were also recognized as commended students.

The District’s Safe Schools Advisory Committee held its first meeting on Sept. 25 at Northshore Middle School. At the meeting, Dr. Reid presented the charge of the committee, chaired by Director of Safety and Security Henry Simon. The committee will study safety and security issues for all schools and make recommendations to Dr. Reid.

The Early Childhood Education Assistance Program (ECEAP) is a state funded preschool program for children ages 3-5. Housed at Hollywood Hill Elementary, the comprehensive program is free for families who meet income eligibility guidelines, and it provides:

• Quality preschool education

• Health and nutrition services

• Family support services

• Opportunities for family participation

School and council PTSA leaders took time out of their busy schedules to attend the Northshore School District/PTSA Connections Luncheon. During the Oct. 9 event, the District Equity and Diversity team presented an interactive session on what equity means, then challenged the group to brainstorm new ways to provide equitable opportunities through PTSA programming and funding. Thank you PTSA for your leadership within our community.

The month of October is Dyslexia Awareness Month. Dyslexia is a neurological condition caused by a different wiring of the brain. Perhaps as many as 15-20% of the population as a whole have some symptoms of dyslexia.

Congratulations to the Northshore elementary schools that ranked in Puget Sound Business Journal’s top 100 elementary schools for the

2017-18 school year. The annual rankings are determined by a variety of factors, including strong academic results for disadvantaged populations, ethnic diversity, teacher experience, and number of students per classroom teacher.

The first Conversation with the Board takes place on Monday, Oct. 15 in the Inglemoor High School library.

This evening forum is open to everyone and designed to allow for two-way conversation in an informal setting.

Attendees are invited to share their ideas about opportunities for Northshore and priorities for the District over the next 3-5 years.

Northshore families and community members are invited to join Dr. Reid for an open chat.

Are you a new art docent or a returning docent who wants a refresher on the “nuts & bolts” of

being a classroom art docent?

The Art Docent training team invites you to attend one of two free training on the basics of being an effective and confident art docent. 

Oct. 19 (Fri.), 10:30-11:30 a.m.

Oct. 23 (Tues.), 6:00-7:00 p.m.

Both trainings will be held at the

District Administrative Center 

3330 Monte Villa Parkway, Bothell.

Parents interested in finding out about the PACE program are invited to attend an information night on Tuesday, Oct. 23, 7 p.m., at any of the three PACE sites: Lockwood, Wellington or Woodmoor Elementary Schools.

PACE is a choice enrichment program open to all students grades 1-5 on a space available basis. The program is hosted at Lockwood, Woodmoor and Wellington elementary schools.

The District and our schools use a communication platform called Blackboard to send messages to our families. Families whose preferred language at home is listed in the student records database as a language other than English may receive Blackboard communications in that designated language. Most communication platforms use auto-translated services that are often incorrect. We apologize for any errors shared as we research a better translation system.

If you prefer to receive your communications in English, please contact your student's school office and ask them to update the primary language to English. This option is found on the Parent screen in the student records database.

School Board meetings are held on the second and fourth Mondays of most months.
