As we enter the end of May, becoming ever closer to summer, we say goodbye to end of season things with graduations, final dance recitals, rituals for school transitions, elementary to middle school and so on. May is also the month where we begin to look forward to summer vacations, camps, vacation bible school, and youth mission trips.
Church life and liturgical calendar follow the same rhythms. On the last Sunday in May we will celebrate Pentecost, often called the beginning of the church. June is the beginning of what is known in the liturgical calendar as ordinary time which lasts until the first Sunday of Advent.
The first Sunday in June begins the Summer Choir! This is where anyone who enjoys singing would like to join in for one Sunday or more. We meet at 10:00 AM in the Sanctuary, no robes, and sing through what we will do in the service. You do not need to be seated in the choir loft the whole worship service. You may come up to sing and then go back to your seat.
Also, beginning the first Sunday in June we will welcome our new organist, Julia Boudreaux! She has many years of experience working in the church and excels at both organ repertoire and service playing. We will have a reception following the service on June 4 to welcome Julia.
The music department will also support a summer music intern. Hannah Sullivan comes to us from Kansas State University where she is a Bachelor of Music Student focusing on music education vocal and bassoon. Hannah will work alongside our current choir librarian, Karen Hohnstein, to restructure the choir library. Hannah will also sing weekly in the summer choir and will utilize her skills and passion for praise music/band-based music to be incorporated into the worship services.
I look forward to June and all the new beginnings for the church and for the lives of our faith community.
