NORTHWAY WEEKLY UPDATE | Week of May 18

This Sunday"Faithful Questions and Bold Assertions"

Scripture: John 14:1-7

Guest Preacher: Dr. Delesslyn A. Kennebrew

“Do not let your hearts be troubled nor afraid…” (John 14:1) This is one of those pronouncements in scripture that sounds impossible, or too good to be true, similar to “be anxious for nothing…” (Philippians 4:6). In both instances Jesus and Paul do not stop there but give the context and further instructions for HOW and WHY. It's also important to know the vocabulary and grammar. Our John text is using a word that means "to agitate that which ought to be at rest." Jesus isn't saying "never" but "not in this moment" and then he offers an assurance that the situation they are in is not as grave as they may imagine. We do ourselves and God a disservice when we try to apply broadly what scripture offers to us in a specific and limited context. This is particularly important as we continue our emphasis on Mental Health, and we seek to normalize talking about it. "It's ok to not be ok." And when we are not OK, it's ok to ask for what we need. As we welcome Pastor Law back from her renewal leave this weekend, let's give thanks that she has modeled this for us, and that Northway's leadership responded in kind. Thanks be to God for the blessing of a caring community. As you open yourself to where your heart is troubled and afraid, God can meet you there, perhaps even through your community, to accompany you till you find peace and rest once again. See you soon.

Mental Health Sunday - May 21

Beloved community, in observance of Mental Health Sunday and with the hope of providing encouraging spiritual care and resources for wellbeing,

we invite you to take the following poll.

A Note from our

Director of Music and Worship Ministries

As we enter the end of May, becoming ever closer to summer, we say goodbye to end of season things with graduations, final dance recitals, rituals for school transitions, elementary to middle school and so on. May is also the month where we begin to look forward to summer vacations, camps, vacation bible school, and youth mission trips.

Church life and liturgical calendar follow the same rhythms. On the last Sunday in May we will celebrate Pentecost, often called the beginning of the church. June is the beginning of what is known in the liturgical calendar as ordinary time which lasts until the first Sunday of Advent.

The first Sunday in June begins the Summer Choir! This is where anyone who enjoys singing would like to join in for one Sunday or more. We meet at 10:00 AM in the Sanctuary, no robes, and sing through what we will do in the service. You do not need to be seated in the choir loft the whole worship service. You may come up to sing and then go back to your seat.

Also, beginning the first Sunday in June we will welcome our new organist, Julia Boudreaux! She has many years of experience working in the church and excels at both organ repertoire and service playing. We will have a reception following the service on June 4 to welcome Julia.

The music department will also support a summer music intern. Hannah Sullivan comes to us from Kansas State University where she is a Bachelor of Music Student focusing on music education vocal and bassoon. Hannah will work alongside our current choir librarian, Karen Hohnstein, to restructure the choir library. Hannah will also sing weekly in the summer choir and will utilize her skills and passion for praise music/band-based music to be incorporated into the worship services.

I look forward to June and all the new beginnings for the church and for the lives of our faith community.

Noelle did not grow up in the Disciples of Christ, but she has found a spiritual home and community here. Please welcome Noelle and look for ways to support her in this role over the coming months.
