NORTHWAY WEEKLY UPDATE | October 22, 2026 | | Sunday, October 25, 2026 10:30 am in the Sanctuary or online "Breath of God: Life Anew" Genesis 1:2 & Genesis 2:7 In the pulpit: Rev. Virzola Law-Allen | | |
Beginning this Sunday, you may notice a few shifts in the flow of our worship service.
These changes are intended to help connect each part of the service more naturally, while allowing for the breath of God to bring new life to the ways we pray, sing, and respond to the movement of the Holy Spirit in us and around the world.
Keep your eyes and ears peeled for opportunities to engage before, during, and after our standard worship times. (This Sunday, you MIGHT even want to be in the sanctuary a few minutes before 10:30. *hint hint*)
With open hearts and open minds, let us worship together.

As God breathes on us, we breathe out the vision God is giving us.
This fall, Northway is entering a season of visioning and stewardship unlike any we have done before. We are not beginning with budgets, goals, or strategic plans. We are beginning with breath.
Throughout Scripture, God's breath brings life where there is none, hope where it has been lost, and courage when people feel afraid. Before we can ask what God is calling us to do, we first pause to ask:
What is God breathing into us right now?
That question is not only for our church. It is also for each of us personally.
What is God breathing into your life? Into your relationships? Into your family? Into your work? Into your hopes for the future? How is God inviting you to steward the gifts, opportunities, and responsibilities entrusted to you?
This year, those questions have become especially meaningful for me. For many years, I have practiced prayerful visioning and stewardship as an individual. Recently married, I find myself asking those same questions in a new way. Not because everything has changed, but because discernment is now something we share. The practices I once held alone are now practices we hold in community as a household.
In many ways, that is what the church does every year.
We each come with our own stories, hopes, and callings. Then, together, we listen for the movement of God's Spirit among us. Alone and together, we ask where God is leading next.
Our worship series, Breath of God: A Vision for What Comes Next, will follow the movement of the beloved hymn Breathe on Me, Breath of God. During the first weeks, we will focus on receiving God's breath: being renewed, learning to love what God loves, allowing our hearts to be shaped, and finding courage for the future. Then, as we approach Commitment Sunday, we will consider how we breathe that vision back into the world through our time, talents, resources, and witness.
Stewardship is more than funding a budget. It is the faithful response to God's gifts. It is asking how we will care for all that God has entrusted to us: our lives, our families, our church, and our world.
As we begin this journey together, I invite you to pray, listen, imagine, and dream.

Dear Northway Family,
Next Sunday, we begin a new worship series, Breath of God: A Vision for What Comes Next. As we prepare for this journey together, I want to share a few reflections from my experience as a member of this church family.
This year’s stewardship and generosity campaign begins not with commitments, budgets, or goals, but with gratitude. Before considering what we might offer, we pause to recognize all that God has already given us.
Every breath is a gift.
Every act of ministry is a gift. Every life touched through Northway is a gift. Each is unearned—a gift freely given in God’s perfect love.
Donna and I have called Northway our church home for more than 40 years. We raised our children here. At Northway, they learned Bible stories, formed lifelong friendships, discovered opportunities to serve, and experienced the love of Christ through a caring community.
Northway has shaped not only our family, but also my own journey of faith.
As a middle school band director, I spend my days helping students discover what happens when many people contribute their unique gifts toward a shared purpose. The same is true in the church: every person matters, and every gift matters. As Paul wrote, many parts, one Body.
While our family has shared our time, talents, and treasure over the years, we have been blessed far more by the relationships we have formed, the love of the people God has brought into our lives, and the example of selfless love set by Jesus.
These experiences have deepened my faith and helped me grow in ways I could never have anticipated. Through serving, giving, worshiping, and sharing life with others, I have witnessed God’s Spirit at work in the world.
I have learned that true generosity is never simply about what we give away. It is also one of the ways God transforms us. To see others, to love others, to be present.
In the weeks ahead, we will prayerfully consider one central question:
What is God breathing into us right now?
As we listen together for God’s vision, I invite you to consider how God may be calling you to share your time, talents, and financial resources in support of the ministries growing among us.
• Commitment Sunday — November 15: We will offer our commitments together as an act of worship.
• Celebration Sunday — November 22: We will gather for worship and a fellowship meal, giving thanks for God’s faithfulness and celebrating what God is doing among us.
Thank you for the many ways you already serve, give, pray, and participate in the life of Northway. Donna and I are grateful to be part of this church family, and we are excited about the future toward which God is leading us.
Let us enter this season prayerfully and expectantly.
Breath Prayer: “Breath of God, fill me with life anew.”
With gratitude and hope,
Paul Schmidt
