When Jesus says, “Go and make disciples,” he gives the church its lifelong calling. Northway, you have been living that calling for one hundred twenty years. Through every season, every generation, and every ministry, you have created a place where disciples are formed, faith is nurtured, and the love of Christ is practiced in real and tangible ways. This summer continues that legacy with joy, creativity, and devotion.

A Season of Safe Space and Discipleship

For three warm Dallas weeks, our campus has been filled with the energy of children and youth from Family Gateway. Their handwritten thank you notes are priceless. They are thoughtful, sweet, and full of appreciation. If you need a moment of encouragement, take time to read them. They are small windows into how God is shaping young hearts through your generosity and devotion.

Disciples Crossing: God Sightings Everywhere

Our young people and adults have been encountering God in the quiet corners and wide open spaces of Disciples Crossing this summer. When you see a camper, ask them about their God sightings. These moments of grace appear in laughter, worship, friendship, and stillness. Their stories remind us that God is always moving.

VBS: Make a Joyful Noise

This year at Northway we tried something new for VBS. For the first time, we wrote our own VBS curriculum. Because we have extraordinary musicians in our congregation,

we built the entire week around the gift of music and the many ways it helps us make a joyful noise to God.

And in this one hundred twenty year legacy of disciple making, Nancy Stewart has picked up the baton with remarkable devotion. Her mother led VBS, and Nancy helped as a child. For thirty eight consecutive years she has carried that legacy forward. This year she served alongside her daughter Ginger and her two sweet grandsons, a living picture of faith passed from one generation to the next. Their presence is a reminder that discipleship is not only taught, it is modeled.

Our teens have also been amazing helpers. They serve as stewards and as a bridge between children and adults. They guide, encourage, and embody the joyful noise they help create.

It has been a joy to watch our instrumentalists tell the stories of their instruments and to watch Pastor Chesna offer history lessons that bring the past to life. The children have been captivated by the sound, the skill, and the devotion of those who play. Each day I marvel at the number of hands that are becoming more convinced that they too may want to play an instrument.

Each day focused on a different family of instruments. We began with strings, then moved to brass, then percussion, and finally woodwinds. Did you know we had all that talent in our church family? What a joy to see the gospel come alive through sound and to watch disciples grow as they learn.

Music does not simply happen. It takes practice, patience, and devotion. Our children are learning many kinds of joyful noises to celebrate God’s love for us. And it is not only about making a joyful noise. The team is doing a beautiful job teaching why we make a joyful noise as the children memorize Psalm 100 and carry its truth in their hearts. I could tell so many stories. Instead, I invite you to stop a child, a youth, or an adult and ask them about joyful noise. Their answers will bless you.

Next Week: Be The Neighbor

Next week we welcome the Be The Neighbor program to our campus. This is another opportunity to provide space for growth as youth serve the community and learn about food insecurity. They will hear how God calls us to be the hands and feet of Christ so that all of God’s children and creation may flourish.

They are watching. They are learning. They are becoming.

Our Nation's 250 Year Anniversary
As our nation approaches its two hundred fifty year anniversary, we hold this moment with gratitude and humility. We give thanks for the opportunities this land has offered, while remembering that God’s love extends to every nation and every people. Our calling is not to claim greatness, but to devote ourselves to the flourishing of all creation. Northway seeks to be a bridge and a lighthouse, a community shaped by the prayer of Jesus in John 17, that we may be one. May our devotion to Christ guide us as we grow in compassion, justice, and hope for all God’s children.

Over the past few months, I’ve been visiting the adult Sunday School classes to talk about a shift in our format. We are finally ready to try out our Sabbath Sundays and new adult Sunday school classes! This new format will include regular Sabbath Sundays on which we will not have Adult Classes and will instead look to rest. These breaks will also help us structure our classes in ways that let new ideas take root. Some classes will continue, like the Bible Study class. Others will change topics with each break. Some will only happen between two Sabbath Sundays as a onetime session. There is a lot of room for creativity and new voices! We hope this encourages us to share the teaching and the learning across our classes.
