Northwest Christian School

Dear NCS family,
Jeff Meyers and David Noebel, as part of their "Understanding the Times" textbook, make a statement that is simple and yet so profound:  "Ideas have consequences.  They form our beliefs, shape our convictions, and solidify into habits."  Tragically, we have reached a point in our culture where you cannot turn on the news, peruse the newspaper, or even walk through the mall without confronting the consequences of bad ideas and their misbegotten worldviews.  Somewhere along the line, we allowed our schools to teach and our society to believe that we are the whimsical descendants of happenstance, the odds-defying result of some cosmological chemical combustion--leading our young people to live their lives as though they had no real consequence, reason to be, or (most tragic of all) loving Creator to glorify.  As a result, we are living in the social, cultural train wreck that invariably occurs when diabolical worldviews give rise to moral compasses that are increasingly pointed due south.

As you roll through May's busy calendar, tempted to believe that Crusaders were done learning for summer, we are going to engage our annual summer reading campaign to remind our students that they are not evolutionary accidents.  Rather, they are lovingly designed by an infinitely creative God who made each one of them "On Purpose" and for a purpose.  If you will join us, summer 2016 will be an opportunity for your family to immerse in truths that will reveal that our Creator views each and every student as mission-critical to His plans for His world.  Further, He's uniquely equipped each of them with gifts, talents, abilities, and interests that He will use to direct them towards His perfect purposes for their lives.  We would invite you to join us in one of several ways...

First, our summer 2016 reading is "The Cost" by creationist Russ Miller. (Learn more about Russ and his ministry here.) The book does an amazing job of illustrating the cost our culture and kids have paid by taking our eye off the ball.  Starting tomorrow, the book will be available in our school office or you can purchase it through Amazon at this link.

Second, each Monday, throughout the summer, beginning May 31st, your inbox will be hit with a short video that will feature author Russ Miller interacting with Northwest Christian staff and faculty, walking you through the book's chapters, illuminating some of the crucial truths found within its pages.  These videos will serve as a perfect companion to your family's pursuit of scriptural truth!

Third, on Friday, June 17th, your family will have an opportunity to join Russ Miller and other Crusader faculty and families on a day trip to the Grand Canyon.  Russ will use that amazing backdrop to show our students clear evidence of God's creative handiwork.  It is an unforgettable time!  You will see rocks that were present when God spoke the world into existence and other clear evidence of our Creator's handiwork.  Spots on that coach bus are available on a first-come, first-served basis.  If you are interested, more information will be coming home on that trip later this week.

Finally, with summer 2016 as the perfect springboard, Russ will be joining us several times through the 2016/2017 school year in chapels, Bible classes, parent meetings, and professional development sessions for teachers.  He will help to train our teachers, teach our students, and coach our parents towards the momentous understanding that we are created "On Purpose" and for a purpose.  I'm praying that the entire Crusader family will find summer 2016 to be a game-changer!
Grateful for the opportunity to serve this school and your family,
Geoff Brown

Tanner Webb and Joseph Simpson Win Their Way to National History Competition in Washington D.C.

After a strong showing in the regional and state competitions, two Crusaders prepare for national competition in Washington D.C.

On March 12th, at La Joya Community High School, Northwest Christian high school students participated in National History Day regional competitions, led by history teacher Mary Hall.  While Crusaders have always done well at the event, their 2016 participation in the competition found a record number of Northwest Christian students winning their division, qualifying them for the state-level competition (pulling together Arizona's six regions) on April 16th at Arizona State University.  Following that second round of competition, Northwest Christian was thrilled to learn that two Crusaders are now moving on to the national level of competition in Washington D.C. this summer.

Joseph Simpson and Tanner Webb assembled an exhibit board and significant amounts of research as part of their NHD project, "Liberte, Egalite, Fraternite" and have now enjoyed success at the regional and state level.  The two are now honored to join 3,000 students from around the world as they participate in the Kenneth E. Behring National History Day Contest.  Taking place from June 12th through 16th, the two Crusaders will enjoy a tremendous learning opportunity as they present their project to judges and spectators alike.

High School Student Council Recognized for Hard Work in Blood Drive

Northwest Christian wins its division in the United Blood Services High School Challenge

In the current school year, more than 170 schools from across the state of Arizona ran blood drives.  High school blood drives bring in an annual average of 23,000 donations, making high school students the top contributing demographic to Arizona's blood supply.  High schoolers account for 1 out of every 10 donations, far surpassing any other age group of donors.  To help drive the participation, United Blood Services of Arizona sponsors an annual "High School Challenge".  On Wednesday, April 27th, the Northwest Christian High School Student Council was invited to the field during the Diamondbacks MLB baseball game and presented with a banner for winning their division of the High School Challenge.

Northwest Christian Fire Science Program Participates in 13th Annual Muster Competition
On Saturday, April 30th, the Crusader Fire Science Program was excited to participate in the 13th Annual High School Fire Fighter Muster Competition which took place at Westgate City Center.  Sponsored by the fire departments from the cities of Phoenix, Glendale, and Peoria, the contest drew over 150 Fire Science students from twelve Phoenix-area high schools.  The competition tests the students' basic firefighting skills in five different events: protective clothing turn-out, donning a Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA), connecting to and operating a fire hydrant, deploying a 150-foot fire attack hose-line, and dragging a 165-pound mannequin, named "Rescue Randy" for 100 feet.
The contest was a first-ever experience for the students in the fire science class.  Now in its third year year, the Northwest Christian Fire Science Program is coordinated by fire fighters Craig Kempinski and Albert Abril.  The two work to coordinate other fire fighters and first responders who work together to provide opportunities for Northwest Christian high school students to prepare for potential careers within fire fighting.

Senior Drew Inness Named as Finalist for 2016 AIA Scholar Athlete of the Year

Inness was also named to the Fiesta Bowl Charities First Team of Scholar Athletes

The Arizona Interscholastic Association Executive Board recently announced the finalists for the 22nd year of the AIA Scholar Athlete Program.  The program is designed to recognize individual students who work hard to demonstrate strong character and exemplary academic achievement while also displaying athletic prowess.  To qualify, the eligible students had to maintain an unweighted GPA of 3.5 or better (rounded), participate on a designated sports team at a Varsity level, and remain a member of the team for the entire sports season.  Nominees were then walked through a selection process that was 40% academics, 40% football achievement, and 20% community citizenship.
On April 2, 2016, in a ceremony at the Hilton Resort in Scottsdale, Northwest Christian senior Drew Inness was among sixty or so athletes who were recognized as part of teams of honorees.  Drew was part of Fiesta Bowl Charities First Team of Scholar Athletes.  Drew also learned that he was one of a handful of finalists for the event's largest prize, 2016 AIA Scholar Athlete of the Year.  The annual AIA Champions Awards Luncheon, presented by Albertsons, will be held on Monday, May 16th, at 1:00 p.m. at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale.  This is when Drew will learn how he fared as a finalist.

I Corinthians 15:55-57
"Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?" The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ."
