About 160 Students rotated among four different sessions learning about many different aspects of nature and STEM. Swan Lake Naturalist, Kristen Bieret, helped to host and organize the event. About 1300 students from Carroll Community, Kuemper Catholic, and Glidden-Ralston attended a STEM festival spanning two days at the Kuemper Fieldhouse in Carroll. Students ranging in grades 6-10 experienced hands-on exhibits put on by 32 Carroll County Businesses! Students learned first hand what some of the STEM skills, problem solving skills, and challenges these careers entail. NW STEM Advisory Board Tours

West Lyon High School's STEM BEST

NW STEM Advisory Board held their March meeting at West Lyon High School on March 24, 2023. NW STEM Advisory Board members and guests received a tour of the West Lyon Industrial Technology facilities and received an overview of the program by educators Shane Peterson and Nate Sievers. Their goal is to build a program that is recognized as one of the best in the state, providing access and training to all West Lyon students. Most students enroll in at least one shop class with a goal of expanding female participation to 40%. The program is using grant funds to purchase (as well as use as matching funds) in order to expand the program. Noteworthy awards are the STEM BEST +HD award, NW STEM Teacher Award as well as a $100,000 award from Grand Falls Casino using new awards for matching funds.

  • Awarded funds were used to purchase 3D printers, CNC mill, other specialty tools and for building expansion.
  • Open shop night every Tuesday
  • Skills USA participation - West Lyon has 2 teams. Last year a team won the state competition, the only team to complete the task. This year they hope to make it to the national competition and in the process of raising funds through their first fundraiser event held, a prime rib dinner with silent auction, on March 23. Approximately $23,000 was raised.
  • Robotics component added as a Scale-Up award, curriculum continues to adapt and expand.
  • West Lyon students will be competing in the NW Iowa Industrial Technology Fair held at NCC in May. Of special note - Junk Yard Challenge, to build a go-cart from scraps using only $150.
