Invasive Species Network News
November 2018

Happy winter! Although the solstice is still three weeks away, it would be difficult to convince those of us in northern Michigan that fall is still present - the cold and snow is officially the norm. As usual during this time of year, ISN is tucked back inside finishing grants, planning for next year, and reflecting on the great work completed in past months! Stay tuned for next month's edition when we round-up ISN's numbers for 2018!

However, in this month's enews, you will find a general update on what we have been up to - including prepping for winter surveys and expanding Go Beyond Beauty. Additionally, learn about this month's "Species Spotlight" and where to find information on upcoming events

As always, please contact ISN if you have any questions regarding identification, treatment, or upcoming events. You can also report plant sightings to the  Midwest Invasive Species Information Network (MISIN).

Yours in Conservation,

ISN Updates

Hemlock woolly adelgid surveying will begin in December.
With funding provided by a sub-grant via The Nature Conservancy and  the Michigan Invasive Species Grant Program, two survey technicians will begin looking for signs of invasive hemlock woolly adelgid - a species not yet identified in our four-county service area. With positive identification just south of us, early detection is critical.
  • ISN's native plant and pollinator photo contest ends on December 6th! Visit our website for more information on how to submit photos.
  • Go Beyond Beauty has expanded to include more in-depth trainings for garden professionals and site visits for other participants (including garden clubs, homeowners, organizations). For a nominal fee, you can reach different achievement levels within the Go Beyond Beauty program while also helping ISN become more self-sustainable. If you are interested in learning more about these updates, please continue reading via our website.
  • We are busy planning our events for 2019. If you have any suggestions of events/trainings/workbees you would like to see happen, we would love your insight. To do so contact ISN Outreach Specialist, Emily Cook - ecook@gtcd.org
