Adopt a Student through Virtual Angel Tree
More than 250 students in need remain on the Northwest ISD Virtual Angel Tree, which opened for adoptions last week.

To adopt an angel, visit the Virtual Angel Tree website and select a student. Angels can be filtered by gender or campus, and each listing includes the student's age, clothing sizes, and interests. Most of the remaining angels are teenagers. The process is entirely anonymous, with a $100 suggested spending budget for each child.

Gifts should be delivered unwrapped with their Angel ID tag attached to the Northwest ISD Administration Building at 2001 Texan Drive in Justin by 7 p.m. Nov. 30. (NOTE: The Administration Building will be closed for Thanksgiving Break from Nov. 23-27.)

This year, 1,174 children qualified for the program, which began almost two decades ago as a physical tree where community members could adopt students meeting certain criteria and provide gifts for them during the holiday season.

Pictured is Byron Nelson High School senior Charitie Luper who signed with UCLA to play volleyball. A full list of students who signed letters of intent along with their sports and future colleges can found on the district website.
Northwest ISD Schools Honor Veterans
NISD salutes its district employees who serve, or have served, in the military with this special video tribute.

Veterans Day celebrations across Northwest ISD looked different this week as restrictions continue due to the global pandemic. Campuses found creative ways to honor those who served in the military through student projects, virtual ceremonies and drive-thru parades.
Liam and Myles Janis shared a unique piece of history with students at Lizzie Curtis Elementary. The campus showcased a World War II bomber jacket that their great-grandfather wore during bombing campaigns over Germany when he was a B17 bombardier.

Several other innovative celebrations are featured below.

Denton County Tax Assessor to Issue Amended Tax Statements
The Denton County Tax Assessor/Collector will issue amended tax statements to NISD homeowners to reflect the district’s overall tax rate of $1.3363.

The 2020 tax statements were prepared and distributed by the tax collector’s office in October (as required by law), which was prior to Northwest ISD’s Voter-Approval Tax Rate Election (VATRE) on November 3. Since the VATRE was not approved by voters, the tax assessor’s office will update the tax rate and issue new tax statements to all property owners.

The new statements will be issued once all three counties confirm all ballots have been counted and the NISD Board of Trustees canvass the election on November 16, making the election results official. For anyone who has already paid the amount listed on the October 2020 statement, the tax collector’s office will issue a refund. For homeowners who have their tax payments as part of their mortgage under escrow, the amended tax statements will also be sent to the mortgage companies.
