Last day of school, graduation ceremonies nearing

Northwest ISD students will end the school year on Friday, June 1, with early-release days set for both that day and the day immediately before, May 31.

Additionally, Northwest ISD will observe Memorial Day on Monday, May 28, making for a short final week of the school year. To see early-release times by campus type for the final two days of school, click here.

The final day of the academic year also marks the first district graduation. Steele Accelerated High School will kick off Northwest ISD's graduations with its ceremony at 7 p.m. Friday, June 1, in Northwest High School's Vernon Solomon Performing Arts Center.

Graduations for Northwest ISD's three comprehensive high schools - Byron Nelson, Eaton and Northwest - will take place Saturday, June 2. Northwest will graduate first at 10 a.m., followed by Byron Nelson at 2 p.m. and Eaton at 6 p.m. Eaton's ceremony will mark the school's first graduating class. These graduations will all take place at the University of North Texas Coliseum in Denton.
Lance Thompson chosen as namesake of Elementary No. 19, located in Harvest

At their May 14 school board meeting, Northwest ISD trustees unanimously approved Lance Thompson as the namesake of the district's 19th elementary school, which will be located in the Harvest community and is anticipated to open in August 2019.

The new elementary school will be located in Northlake, in the Harvest community off of F.M. 407. Northwest ISD received donated property from the Thompson family, and the school board approved the contract agreement on April 11, 2016. The district naming selection committee met and confirmed the name, Lance Thompson, as submitted on the donation deed, meets the criteria specified in the local board policy and made its recommendation to the board.

Lance Thompson was a young Northwest ISD resident who was born in 1981 and passed away suddenly in 1987. His father, Roger Thompson, was a rancher in the Justin area for many years and a Northwest ISD school board member from 1989 to 2001. Lance's mother, Sharla Stockard, retired from Northwest ISD as the district's student data services coordinator.

Construction on Lance Thompson Elementary School is scheduled to begin this summer. The school will be the first to use Northwest ISD's new prototype elementary school design, which was created by Huckabee. Joeris General Contractors will build the school. The two-story school will feature several collaboration spaces, with the heart of the school anchored by a learning commons and library area featuring a built-in Makerspace.

New principals named for Hatfield, Love
Also at Monday's board meeting, trustees approved the next principals of Hatfield and Love elementary schools, with the new leaders assuming their roles this summer.

Jim Mahler will take over at Hatfield, replacing Carrie Pierce, who will be principal of the district's new Lizzie Curtis Elementary School. Mr. Mahler is currently the assistant principal of Roanoke Elementary School and was previously an assistant principal at a White Settlement ISD elementary school.

Mr. Mahler began his career in Northwest ISD 11 years ago, serving as a teacher at Prairie View and Sendera Ranch elementary schools. Additionally, he is a former Exemplar Educator in Northwest ISD and has served on many curriculum writing teams, and he has designed and implemented various family curriculum nights and summer book club programs.

Lisa Crosslin will serve as the new principal of Love, moving to Texas from Oklahoma, where she has spent the past 25 years in education. She has been the principal of West Field Elementary School in Edmond, Oklahoma, since 2013. She has more than 20 years of experience in education administration, including principal, special education director, guidance counselor and a Title I/federal programs director in Oklahoma and Colorado.

Her education career began as an English teacher at the secondary level.  She has served as a workshop facilitator for numerous organizations and conferences for Oklahoma public schools and is a Great Expectations Model School Principal. She is the recipient of various grants that focus on technology and action-based learning labs.
