Record 35 Steele ECHS students will graduate with associate degrees

Thirty-five Steele Early College High School seniors will graduate not only with their high school diplomas, but also with associate degrees — saving thousands of dollars in college tuition.

This is the largest group of Steele seniors to complete an associate degree, collectively earning 2,261 dual college credit hours. Through the dual credit program, students receive both high school and college credit for the same coursework.

Research shows that students who participate in dual credit programs are more likely to continue on to both two- and four-year colleges. Over the past eight years, Texas students in dual credit programs have consistently graduated from four-year colleges at higher rates than their peers who did not participate.

As part of the program, students are exposed to a wide variety of academic fields. Many plan to pursue degrees in areas like nursing, business and computer science at universities across Texas and out of state.

Daniel Elementary Pre-K students hit the road

Pre-Kindergarten students at Daniel Elementary had an amazing week as they hit the road for Driving Day, then brought their wheels inside for a Drive-In Movie!

First, students learned the rules of the road in their very own Driving Day. Leading up to the event, students learned about road signs and traffic lights and earned "money" each day for demonstrating safe, respectful and responsible behavior. After taking a driving and vision test, students used their earnings to pay for a license and insurance card.

With the help of their families, students crafted cardboard vehicles at home and brought them to school for Driving Day. Students demonstrated what they had learned by driving through a marked course. Local police officers even volunteered to help with the activities!

A couple of days later, students got to kick back and enjoy a movie and popcorn at the Drive-In. Students watched from inside their homemade cardboard cars, turning the cafeteria into a cozy and creative mini theater.
