Northwest ISD schools and offices will be closed Monday, Nov. 2 for a student and staff holiday, as approved in the 2020-2021 school year calendar. There will be no school on Tuesday, Nov. 3, which is a professional development day for Northwest ISD staff.

The 2020-2021 and 2021-2022 school calendars were approved by the Board of Trustees in January following two rounds of community input and can be viewed on the district website.

In Dr. Warren's first sit-down interview with NHSTV this year, he shared updates with student reporter Allie Jo Owens. He also gave updates about the 2020-2021 school year, remote learning, and answered questions about the Bond/VATRE elections during last night's Facebook Live update.

Throughout the month, students who received a Trustee Award of Excellence for the 2019-2020 school year were presented with their awards. Due to COVID, the annual ceremony that normally takes place in the spring was postponed.

Board of Trustees Election: The annual school board election, which is usually held annually in May, was postponed due to the public health crisis. Three Board seats (Places 5, 6, and 7) will be on the ballot.

Bond Election: The May 2020 bond election, which was postponed due to the public health crisis, will now be presented to voters in November. The bond proposal is designed to address growth, aging facilities, technology, and student programs. New law requires the proposal to be separated into multiple propositions and that the ballot include the statement "This is a property tax increase." However, the NISD tax rate will not change as a result of the bond propositions.

Voter-Approval Tax Rate Election (VATRE): The Board adopted the 2020-2021 tax rate of $1.4663 which triggered a VATRE (formerly called a TRE or Tax Ratification Election).

The race will be held virtually, with participants running the race when and where they choose between November 15 and December 12.

While Northwest ISD students are learning about digital citizenship in the classroom, parents can check out the Family Connections Hub for additional resources and ways to talk to your kids about being a good digital citizen.

In the Digital Privacy and Security lesson, students explore the responsibility that comes with sharing and connecting with others online.

Talk to your kids about what rules they should follow to keep themselves safe. Ask what kinds of information they share online, and who they think sees that information. Discuss what steps you can take as a family to protect yourselves online, like creating better passwords, checking phone settings, etc.
