Remembering Dr. David Hicks
Memorial scholarship fund announced in his honor
Those who knew Dr. David Hicks remember a man who formed meaningful, lasting relationships. Through his encouragement and uplifting demeanor, Dr. Hicks showed us how to be intentional and kind, often providing regular acts of appreciation and service to others. Northwest ISD encourages those so inclined to share their thoughts and memories on this Facebook post, which will be compiled and given to the Hicks family. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked for donations to the David Hicks Memorial Scholarship Fund managed by the Northwest ISD Education Foundation.

For those interested in attending, commemorative arrangements will take place at Sherman High School, located at 2907 W. Travis St. in Sherman, at the following dates and times.

  • Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, September 16
  • Viewing: 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday, September 17
  • Funeral: 2 p.m. Saturday, September 17
#HeartsLikeHicks Day
Northwest ISD staff, students and community members honored Dr. David Hicks by wearing the red, white and blue of his favorite sports team, the Texas Rangers. Search #HeartsLikeHicks on our social media platforms to see our community paying tribute to the vibrant life of Dr. Hicks.
Students participate in 9/11 stair climb
Each 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb participant pays tribute to a FDNY firefighter by climbing or walking the equivalent of the 110 stories of the World Trade Center. Student-athletes from the district's high schools paid tribute to the 343 firefighters who lost their lives in their heroic journeys to save others by climbing the steps at NISD Stadium on September 11.

Students presented short speeches and encouraged all participants to finish their climbs, even if it meant walking extra stairs. Thank you for sharing your patriotism with us, students!

Volunteer approvals taking longer to process
Please be aware that because of backlogs with court systems, background checks for volunteering are taking additional time to process. While background checks are typically expected to take about three days, the delays are causing them to take up to three weeks.

Northwest ISD partners with a respected service to gather these reports, though our partner can only operate as quickly as the court system. Please keep this in mind when volunteering, and we encourage anyone who plans to volunteer this year to submit a background check immediately instead of waiting.
After-school enrichment opportunities available for students
AlphaBest Education has partnered with local vendors to offer a wide variety of after-school enrichment classes for Northwest ISD's elementary students!

For online registration, visit www.ezcomed.com/parentAlphaBEST. Registration closes September 23.

Please see this flyer for additional information.
Community Folder available for local groups
As a service to Northwest ISD's students, parents, and community, the district provides the Community Folder for non-school groups or organizations to provide information that may be of interest or a benefit to students and families.

The information for the Community Folder is an electronic communication that can be for elementary school students, secondary school students or both. Links to the Community Folder will be placed on each campus website. NISD will remind students, parents, and community members to frequently check the latest information posted.
