What is a VATRE?

What is a VATRE? A Voter-Approval Tax Rate Election is the only mechanism Texas schools have to increase their operations tax rate. Northwest ISD has called a VATRE, and if approved by voters, the district would use this funding to maintain student programs and retain and recruit staff.

Northwest ISD leaders will host several in-person meetings for presentations and audience questions. To see a list of informational meeting dates and learn more about the VATRE, visit www.nisdtx.org/vatre. Early voting will take place October 21 to November 1, and Election Day takes place Tuesday, November 5.

NISD students teaming up for '10,000 for the Troops'

Last year, NISD students from many campuses crafted and collected 3,300 holiday cards for KSCS 96.3’s 10,000 for the Troops. The project sends cards to troops overseas who won’t be able to spend the holidays with their families.

This year, students from Northwest High School, Chisholm Trail, Pike and Wilson middle schools, as well as Carter, Haslet, Justin, Lance Thompson, Prairie View, Sendera Ranch, Seven Hills and J.C. Thompson elementary schools have already begun making cards.

Anyone who would like to help these schools reach their goal is welcome to participate by bringing homemade cards to one of the 12 campuses listed above by November 1. Check out the flyer for additional information.

Byron Nelson student performs with The Cliburn

With animal costumes in one hand and his violin and bow in the other, Byron Nelson High School junior Connor Pruett had everything he needed for an eventful Saturday afternoon.

On September 14, Connor had a chance at a very unique opportunity as he was asked to perform with The Cliburn in the world-renowned musical organization’s Family Concert series. Earlier in the summer, Connor’s private instructor came to him with the opportunity, and he instantly jumped on board.

In a concert titled Carnival of the Animals, Connor was the only student who joined six professional musicians for a pair of shows at the Fort Worth Zoo. Playing part of the program wearing donkey ears and another in chicken feet, and with various animals from the zoo making appearances throughout, the performance was one that Connor will never forget.

Medlin Men volunteer time on GRIT Friday

Middle school students love recess too... and once a month the Medlin Men, a Watch DOGS organization, are helping make it happen! Last Friday after lunch, all Medlin Mustangs who were caught up and on track with their school work got to cut loose and have some fun!

GRIT Friday is an excellent partnership between Medlin Middle School and many male role models in the community. These men volunteered their time on a hot Friday afternoon as a way to help reward students for a job well done.

GRIT stands for Growth mindset, Relationships, Integrity and Teamwork and these are values that Medlin Mustangs strive for every day, and GRIT Friday is in place to help recognize their hard work.
