Learning and Laughter All Summer!
Summer learning plays a vital role in helping K–8 students maintain and reinforce essential skills without the pressure of high-stakes academics. Research shows that “students lose about 20 percent of the school year’s gains in reading and 27 percent in math during summer break” (Kuhfeld & Tarasawa, 2020), making it important to keep young minds engaged. However, learning during the summer should also feel enjoyable and flexible. The National Summer Learning Association emphasizes that “summer learning should be fun, enriching, and engaging—not a source of stress” (NSLA, 2023). Beyond academics, summer is also a chance to build strong connections with kids through shared experiences, and fun activities that support emotional and social development. Reading together, exploring nature, or playing educational games can all make learning meaningful while creating lasting memories.
