2026 Spelling Bee

Congratulations to eighth grader Mabel W., who won her fourth spelling bee in a row this morning. Redmond H. in grade 5 was our first runner up!

We are proud of all of our spelling bee participants today. They rose to the challenge with some of the most difficult words we have seen in a school bee!

From the Assistant Principal's Office

As we enter the new year, my hope is that you and your family had time to rest, recharge, and enjoy meaningful moments together to welcome in 2026.

Our monthly theme for January is Confidence & Leadership: Believing in Yourself and Leading by Example. Developed by our Universal Team, this theme was placed strategically in January to encourage students to take on a renewed sense of ownership as we return from winter break. A month often associated with goal-setting, reflection, and fresh starts, January provides students with an opportunity to build confidence in their actions and decisions while recognizing the impact those choices have on themselves and others.

At Northwood School, we believe that leadership does not mean perfect behavior, quiet compliance, or never making mistakes. Leadership looks different for every child. Many students, especially those who may struggle behaviorally, already demonstrate strong leadership traits such as confidence, visibility, influence among peers, and a willingness to take risks. These qualities are strengths. Our goal is not to suppress them, but to help students learn how to use them in positive and productive ways.

I am proud to share that our Student Council recently presented to the School Board, offering a wonderful snapshot of the positive culture at Northwood School. They highlighted Positive Office Referrals and Monthly Theme Awards, student-led mini-lessons for our elementary students, schoolwide initiatives such as the Giving Tree and food donations, a wrap-up of athletics, and a glimpse into their goals for the upcoming trimester. Their leadership and pride in our school were evident and deeply appreciated.

These efforts remind us that leadership at Northwood School extends beyond the classroom and is strengthened through partnership with our families and community. When students see adults modeling generosity, service, and care for others, it reinforces the values we strive to teach and inspires them to lead with empathy.

With that in mind, I would also like to sincerely thank our families and community members for their generosity during the season of giving through the Giving Tree. Your kindness and willingness to support others reflect the compassion and care that define our school community and provide powerful examples of empathy and service for our students.

Finally, I am grateful for the parent volunteers who continue to support our school. It has been wonderful to see even more families joining us in the building, helping with bulletin boards and projects that showcase student learning and accomplishments. Your involvement strengthens the partnership between home and school.

Thank you for your continued support of Northwood School. I look forward to continuing this important work together in the new year.

~ Ms. Gilliam

Parent Volunteer Needed

We are looking for a parent volunteer to serve on the calendar committee to develop the 2026-2027 school calendar. The committee generally meets once or twice for about an hour after school (work schedules can be accommodated) in late January. One parent will be selected randomly from the pool of volunteers. If you are interested, please contact Ms. Young by email or phone (603-942-5488).

STEM Club News

The Northwood School STEM Club competed in a VEX Robotics regional qualifying event at Oyster River Middle School on Saturday, December 13. Northwood School sent four teams, and all students represented the school well throughout the day.

Students competed in teams of three, collaborating with other schools during matches to score points by moving and stacking cones on the competition field. In addition to team matches, students also participated in individual skills challenges and programmed their robots to complete tasks independently for points.

All four teams posted strong results, and two teams, the Emo Emus and the Fashionable Ferrets, qualified for the state championship in Manchester on March 8. Congratulations to all of our STEM Club participants on a successful competition!

C.O.D.E. Night

(Community Outreach Digital Education)

On January 21 from 4:00–6:00 PM, we will be hosting a Device Technology Support Night in the school cafeteria. Community members are invited to stop by with a new computer or device they may have received over the holidays and get help with setup or a brief introduction to how it works.

Our students will be available to provide one-on-one support, helping community members navigate common tasks and features of modern devices. Experienced adult volunteers will also be on hand to guide students, assist with more complex questions, or help with setting up personal accounts as needed.

There is no formal program or appointment required. Feel free to arrive anytime during the two-hour window, and we will connect you with a student helper. If additional support is needed beyond January 7, we will be happy to help coordinate follow-up assistance.

We look forward to welcoming community members for an evening of learning, connection, and shared problem-solving. Please contact Mr. Robert with any questions.

News from the Library

What's just as sweet as gumdrops? 5th graders excitedly working on a STEM challenge!

Each duo got 20 gumdrops and 20 toothpicks and had to construct a bridge that could bear weight. There were many different designs. We tested the bridges using paperback books; the record was 20!
