From the Superintendent
Dear SAU #44 Community Member,
I plan on writing you a more comprehensive communication on Sunday about the COVID-19 pandemic and the potential need for remote instruction and school closures. I also want to alert you to a schedule change for next week, to provide you as much time as possible for planning purposes. I had already modified the professional development day for next Friday March 20th, to give time for the staff to plan for remote instruction. However, given what has become a rapidly changing situation, I am writing to let you know that at this point I am changing that day from Friday, March 20th to this coming Monday, March 16th.
As a result, there will be no school for students in PreK through grade 8 this Monday, March 16th
. If the school remains open, there will be school for these students next Friday, March 20th. Please watch for a more comprehensive update Sunday evening. Thank you for your understanding and patience.
Scott Reuning, Superintendent SAU #44

From the Technology Director
COVID-19 and your computer:
Unlike the days of old when your technology director or computer teacher would talk about computer viruses, these days most of the talk is about trying not to catch a virus from your computer. While washing your hands and not touching your face is imperative to trying to fend of flu and cold, another thing to consider are those devicse you put your hands on multiple times a day… your computer and your phone.
As a rule, during these times of risk of communicable diseases you should take some simple steps to reduce risk from these devices.
First off, you should wash your hands after working on a computer, especially if it is one that is shared with others, like in a classroom or a family unit.
The device’s keyboard and touchscreen (if it has one) should be cleaned either with a diluted disinfectant type cleaner or wipe. Make sure it is not too wet. I let a wipe air out for a minute or two and then wipe the keyboard down a couple of times and the screen as well. Phones should be treated the same way. Believe it or not, your phone is contaminated with all kinds of germs most of the time. Between touching it and talking into it, the phone could use a good decontamination every day.
At the school we are looking at providing grades K-2 extra sanitizing wipes to take care of the shared computers and iPads in the classrooms. As for grades 3-8, these grades are 1:1 and are mostly used by one student only. For students in these grades, we are recommending washing of hands repeatedly during the day and cleaning any shared devices daily.
We are working to keep our devices clean and encourage you at home to do the same. A few things to note: Do not wipe your keyboard down with a soaking wet cloth or spray cleaner directly on screens or keyboards. Let wipes air out a couple of minutes and spray cleaner on a cloth first. Try not to use paper towels on computer screens - they can actually scratch the screen.

If your child joined our school recently, don't forget to fill out a free and reduced application. These need to be filled out every year, and any time a child changes school. Also, if you have had a change in income or the number of people in your household, you can do a second application in the same school year.
Please be advised that snack milk is not part of the free and reduced program and costs $.50 for all students.
If you need assistance with the application, please feel free to contact your child's counselor.

Kindergarten News
It’s maple season! The Kindergarteners boiled and boiled sap to make maple syrup. The children enjoyed the warm syrup over vanilla ice cream....yummy!

In celebration with NEA Read Across America Week the Kindergarteners had two very special visitors. We want to thank local authors Rebecca Rule and Adi Rule. They joined us for an afternoon story time and answered many questions from curious children. The kids enjoyed hearing about how an author gets their ideas, how a book is made, and that you can go to work in your pjs! Thank you for sharing your love of books with us!

The track program only works if we have interested parents to volunteer to help with measuring, timing and supervising the different age groups. No experience is necessary. The Coe Brown athletes also help to make this program a success.
We are excited to continue to build our NH Thunder running program. Our emphasis is completely on fun and participation. We are looking forward to another great year.
